Could you flex again, please?I see absolutely no reason for women who choose to join the military to be held back from the front lines simply due to the fact that they're female."no subject
Sure. *flexes his arm and then accidently brushes his arms against her*"So why does the military have this rule in the first place? It's so archaic...and yet, I've been reading about some historical women who fought on the front line -- one, err...Katherine of France, apparently, rode half naked into a battlefield during something called the crusades? Now the half-naked part, I can live without, but that's quite an example."no subject
Very nice. *reaches up to push her hair back and--oops--accidentally runs the back of her hand against Lee's arm"It's incredibly archaic," said Janet. "It's also ridiculous, arrogant, and incredibly condescending to women to believe that they can't handle themselves on the front lines of miltary operations. Unfortunately, biased views like that have become institutionalized over the years. There are women and men who've been working for years to change the rules.""So things aren't like that in your Twelve Colonies?" she asks. "Nice. I bet there's no equivalent term to 'male chauvinist pig' either."

Lee shivers in delight as Janet's warm hand is soft on his firm and muscular arm."We're pretty gender ignorant when it comes to the Fleet and many of our best pilots are women because of their reflexes and attention to detail. Many of our battlestars are commanded by women too.Doesn't mean we don't have issues, of course. Frat regs are there for a reason and they're broken all the time.
Which both disgusts me and EXCITES ME LIEK WHOA. I WANT TO SEX A HOT FIGHTER PILOT CHICK! OMG!"no subject
Janet notices Lee's shiver and reaches out to gently squeeze his bicep. That's some very nice muscle tone."The Fleet? That's your equivalent to our Air Force, right? A lot of women want to be fighter pilots. Depending on what dimension you're from, of course; women may have made more progress in some versions of Earth than in otherslike, for example, my own.""Frat regs?" Janet's voice went up--just a little bit--and her eyes widened--just a trace. "Oh, yes, I'd agree those have a definite reason
even though my best friend was in love with her CO for years and is now a simmering pile of UST whenever he's around, so I sympathize with your issues about sexing a hot fighter pilot, believe me. Breaking them would be bad."no subject
Lee's arm flexes again, flinching as he keeps himself from pushing Janet against a shelf of books in a sexy sort of way."The Fleet is sort of like your entire Armed forces. The hub for both the marines, air patrol and battlestars. The standing army is also connected with them.""It's hard to think straight when you're fighting next to a girl who could kick your ass," he admits, "but I think it improves morale, I suppose? And ups the competition, which is always helpful." He looks away a little red in the face suddenly and his eyes narrow. "Lots of court martials, though, when a guy can't handle it...." he trails off.

Janet notices the look in Lee's eyes and ponders pushing him up against a shelf of books herself."That's a fascinating organizational structure," she says, barely resisting the urge to see if he has a book she can borrow. She's got too much reading to do as it is. "The marines and standing army are your sources of ground troops, then? Battlestars must be the equivalent tothe Prometheusaircraft carriers, and the air patrols sound like a sort of a combination of Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard.""Wouldn't you rather have her on your side, though, then angry at you behind the scenes because she can't help out?" asks Janet. "Look at it this way: You can draw the best people from the entire population instead of just under fifty percent of it. It also greatly increases the available population of potential combatants." She conveniently doesn't notice his blush or any awkwardness in the conversation. "Some guys can't handle the idea. That's why women are generally just banned here in this country. But not everyone is like that, and it's better not to punish everyone for the potential mistakes of a few people."
