Ocker 101 - week 5 - period 4 [11/06]

The class had been told to meet at the end of the Causeway, which was where Mick was waiting. When they'd all arrived, Mick gestured to the portal. "G'day. No idea how this thing works, but it's a little ripper. Bloke says it'll take us straight to Walkabout Creek. Come on." With that, he turned and gestured for the class to follow him through the portal.

On the other side, they'd find themselves standing on a dusty road in the middle of nowhere, a nowhere that was very hot and very dry.

Welcome to Walkabout Creek.

Mick led his class into the pub.

"G'day you pack of bastards! Mick's come home," he yelled as he entered, and was greeted with various catcalls and cries of, 'It's about time, you bastard!'. "Yeah, I know. Only here for a quick trip, and I brought my class. You lot look after 'em, all right? Specially the frog presuming he's there."

This was greeted with dead, almost stunned, silence, finally broken by Wally saying, "Who the bloody hell let you teach?!"

"Been trying to figure that one out meself!" The pub broke into laughter, and Mick ushered his class inside. "Walkabout Creek Hotel. Make yourself at home. Shirl'll take your order at the bar if you want some tucker or a drink, just stay away from the bloody Fosters. Stuff tastes like piss. I'll be keepin' an eye on you, but if you get into trouble, just give us a yell. It's my shout, so anything you want, Shirl'll put it on my tab," he added. "Go on, have fun."

[What we've got here is gonna be a whole lotta OCD, and you're just gonna have to wait. The class has actually left Fandom entirely, but a squirrel is welome to smuggle itself along for radio purposes.]

Edmund glanced around at the other students with a wary expression he was trying to cover with confidence. As the TA, he felt it was his duty to be reassuring. "Portal then," he said to them once Mick had walked through and followed after him.

Cara wished it to be known she was only going through the portal under duress. As far as she was concerned, if a portal didn't have the Midlands and her friends on the other side, it was Bad News.

Portals were still amazing things to him even if he'd been through one a time or two. Without hesitation, he walked through, excited about seeing another place.

James did a quick check to make sure he had everything on him he thought he'd need; he did. He marched through the portal without delay.

Okay, so Clark was all kinds of excited to take a trip off-island. Even if it was with the crazy Aussie.

He didn't pretend to understand how the time zones or portals worked, accepting just about anything after the riot his laundry threw while he was getting dressed earlier in the day.

The first thing that occurred to Edmund was that it was hot. Not the heat of a Fandom summer, or the light warmth of a Narnian summer, but a dry, blaring heat that you could almost taste on your tongue while it stripped it of any moisture.

Of course, he might have been overreacting, not that he would ever admit to it.

It was brown. Brown, hot, flat, and dusty. But mostly brown.

Still, after being in a place as built up as Fandom for over a month, she was grateful for being in a place she could actually see the horizon without much trouble.

It was warm here. Thankfully, it was warm back on the island to so he'd dressed lightly but it was a different kind of warm and Jonas found himself shading his eyes as he took in the flat, brown landscape. Very different to what he'd become accustomed to.

It was as hot as Kesh (or so the stories from soldiers' told).

He looked around; this place was smaller than Fandom, not as many buildings. James was a city boy without a city, now.

Different equaled cool, and Clark took his time looking around, really wishing he'd gotten himself some sunglasses for the brown glare.

Edmund hadn't had lunch, so if they were going to be here (and oh how he was wishing for Fandom's greener pastures right now), he thought he might as well have something to eat. "Hello," he said, feeling very out of place amongst the accents he could hear around him. "Might I please have the bangers and mash?"

It mightn't have looked exactly like the kind of inn you'd find in the Midlands, but it was similar enough that Cara felt on more familiar ground, and judging from the smells coming from the kitchen, Zedd would like it here well enough.

"Ale," she said, then added "Thanks." It was probably best to be polite around the crazy people.

With a drink in her, Cara felt comfortable leaning back against the bar, forgetting for one moment that her leathers mightn't be recognised as a 'Keep Away' signal like they were in the Midlands.
wrongkindofsith: (Pretty sure you're insane)

Re: Try and knock the beer off Duncan's head

[personal profile] wrongkindofsith 2010-06-11 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
Cara looked Duncan over thoughtfully. Off the top of her head she could think of a half-dozen ways to get that beer off his head, but most of them would end with him bleeding on the floor, and that kind of thing, tended to start bar-fights, which she didn't mind but usually ended in her getting glared at by Richard or Kahlan, or both of them.

In the end, practically won out over a sense of fun (though the truly practical thing would have been to simply ignore him), and stepping to one side, she simply reached up and used a finger to push the glass off the top of his head.

Duncan stared at her for one long moment, then at the floor, then back at her, before bursting into laughter. Cara wasn't entirely sure about that, but since it didn't seem to involve trying to kill the Mord'Sith, she was willing to go along with it.

He was very glad of that fact. Nonetheless, it was his job to keep an eye on the students and so he found a place to sit with his food and watch out for the other students.
