Janet unlocked the library, slammed her bookbag on the floor behind the desk, and started making a list of overdue books.

"Well, maybe there's going to be an explanation of the lesson next week," says Janet. "I doubt I'll be there for it, though."

"I'm not sure I care what her explanation is," Sam said, glancing down at Liz. "No lesson is worth this."

"She's wrong," said Janet. "Whatever justification she gave for this lesson, could she possibly have thought first about the fact that this isn't a normal high school and that we're not all innocent kids?"
