Rookiehood 101, Tuesday, Period 4

"Yo, Rookies!" Hark, was that the territorial call of the wild Reno in his natural habitat? Oh, it totally was. "Bit of a change of pace for you this week, yo. When this period ends, you're all on a mission, yo. This week, I ain't gonna be the teacher."

He smirked, and then set out on that slow, deliberate saunter of his, walking paces back and forth in front of the class.

"Half of you are. And half of you are gonna be the rookies. All you teachers? It's gonna be your job to look out for the rookies this week. Rookies? It's your job to be... rookies. Make like you don't know nothin'. Give your teacher a rough time, yo. Do whatever it is you figure rookies do."

He nodded at the board, where he'd scrawled out the names of the two groups.

"Today, just pair off, figure out what it is you're gonna be rookies at. You can teach and learn just about anything, but be prepared to tell me next week what it was you did and how it went, yo. Teachers? Word of advice? Just because you got some theoretical kinda power right now don't mean you get to abuse it. If you're gonna tell 'em to run laps around the island, you damn well better be prepared to run 'em too. And you better be better at it. They ain't gonna respect you if you don't come off as competent, yo. They're your rookies, so it's up to you to set an example, here."

He smirked, and then waved his hands at the class.

"Go on, get to it. Don't let me keep you waitin', yo."

. . . so it was kind of like a master-apprentice pairing. Which Tahiri had to find slightly amusing, given that she'd only been a full Knight for a few months now. (Maybe it was close to a year, factoring in the time difference from home.)

But, she wondered, tapping a finger against her chin, what was she particularly good at that she could teach? Recovering from being slightly insane? Appreciating ice cream? Huh. This might take some communication.

. . . yeah, that wasn't one of her strong points either.

Ben shot her an amused look. With the way Reno had set things up, at least they couldn't end up in some kind of bizarre Master-apprentice pairing themselves?

Because that would have been awkward.

"Any idea what wisdom you want to impart, Temporary-Master Skywalker?"

"Flying," Ben answered promptly. "Or ice cream appreciation. Or sabacc."

"Oh, good, at least one of those isn't something I can do," Tahiri noted. Yes, yes, he'd be much more qualified than she was to teach someone to fly, but details. "It's suddenly hitting me all over again how completely unsuitable I am for a boring civilian life."

He smiled. "What were you thinking of teaching?"

Yes. Well. That was a career for former Jedi who'd walked away from the life, and she already knew someone who'd done that, thank you, Zekk.

"More or less the same," Tahiri admitted, "except for the sabacc. What do you suppose the odds are that someone will want to learn to ride a bantha? And if they did, where would I get one?"

She really missed nerf steak, but shh.

"I called it a space cow last night and he thought that was pretty much the greatest thing he'd ever heard," Ben said with a little laugh.

Tahiri slapped a hand over her mouth to muffle the worst of the laughter. "Well, if I ever happen to lift a rock with the Force and find a random, surprise nerf hiding under there, I'll be sure to let him know."

Excuse Tahiri for a moment. She needed to just stare at Ben for a while.

Maybe he and Zack shouldn't be allowed to hold an unsupervised conversation.

Jenny was excellent at many things, but most of them weren't the sort of skill you taught high schoolers. This could be interesting. And fun, as long as no one got arrested.

See, after she'd gotten done her bit of sulking, and realized that Chloe was on the other end of the equation, Ino had to say something.

"So," she said quietly. "What're you going to teach, Rookie?"

Ino was totally going to call Chloe that no matter what her status on the board said, yes. It was a special case.

Let's see how long it takes for Chloe to realize what she just said.

Ino bit her lip and willed herself not to laugh. No. Laughing!

"You sure 'bout that?" she said, arching one eyebrow. While she managed to keep from laughing, there was no hiding the amusement in her eyes. "You might shock your rookie, you know."

"But why would --" Then it hit her what she said and she turned a very bright red. "Hair!" She squeaked pulling up a section of her red-streaked hair. "Streaking hair not the other!"

She was not going to laugh. Nooot going to laugh.

Ino was going to grin, however. She permitted herself that. Also, it was grin or completely lose it.

"I know," she said reassuringly. "But if you get a rookie who likes to be a pain, you're goin' to have to watch what you say, yeah?"

Ino knew this. Mostly because she was the pain in the ass sort of rookie herself.

"As long as I don't get knocked out, tied up and left in a crawlspace again, I should be okay," she murmured hopefully. "The pretend rookies wouldn't try that, right?"

As soon as Reno explained the assignment in enough detail to make relative sense, Karla started trying to make a list of what she could teach her Rookie to do. So far, she had two lists:

Stuff I'm Good At But Can't Actually Teach:
-Craft
-Tangled Weaving
-True Dreams
-Healing the Land

and

Stuff That's Teachable But Not In A Week
-Piano
-Dancing
-Horseback Riding
-Protocol

It was going to be a long morning.

WONDERFUL.

Squall wasn't a rookie. He couldn't remember the last time he'd BEEN a rookie. And this assignment was stupid. He hated the fact he'd been assigned to the rookie group. And he hated the class. And... he was really, really glad he wasn't in the teachers group, because that sounded like too much work.
