"Yo, Rookies!" Hark, was that the territorial call of the wild Reno in his natural habitat? Oh, it totally was. "Bit of a change of pace for you this week, yo. When this period ends, you're all on a mission, yo. This week, I ain't gonna be the teacher."

He smirked, and then set out on that slow, deliberate saunter of his, walking paces back and forth in front of the class.

"Half of you are. And half of you are gonna be the rookies. All you teachers? It's gonna be your job to look out for the rookies this week. Rookies? It's your job to be... rookies. Make like you don't know nothin'. Give your teacher a rough time, yo. Do whatever it is you figure rookies do."

He nodded at the board, where he'd scrawled out the names of the two groups.

"Today, just pair off, figure out what it is you're gonna be rookies at. You can teach and learn just about anything, but be prepared to tell me next week what it was you did and how it went, yo. Teachers? Word of advice? Just because you got some theoretical kinda power right now don't mean you get to abuse it. If you're gonna tell 'em to run laps around the island, you damn well better be prepared to run 'em too. And you better be better at it. They ain't gonna respect you if you don't come off as competent, yo. They're your rookies, so it's up to you to set an example, here."

He smirked, and then waved his hands at the class.

"Go on, get to it. Don't let me keep you waitin', yo."

Ben shot her an amused look. With the way Reno had set things up, at least they couldn't end up in some kind of bizarre Master-apprentice pairing themselves?

Because that would have been awkward.

Oh, just a little awkward. Just a little, as Tahiri's crooked half-grin in response seemed to indicate.

"Any idea what wisdom you want to impart, Temporary-Master Skywalker?"

"Flying," Ben answered promptly. "Or ice cream appreciation. Or sabacc."

"Oh, good, at least one of those isn't something I can do," Tahiri noted. Yes, yes, he'd be much more qualified than she was to teach someone to fly, but details. "It's suddenly hitting me all over again how completely unsuitable I am for a boring civilian life."

Ben wasn't going to point out their skillset also worked well in a career as a bounty hunter,

He smiled. "What were you thinking of teaching?"

Yes. Well. That was a career for former Jedi who'd walked away from the life, and she already knew someone who'd done that, thank you, Zekk.

"More or less the same," Tahiri admitted, "except for the sabacc. What do you suppose the odds are that someone will want to learn to ride a bantha? And if they did, where would I get one?"

"I don't know," Ben replied, "but if you find one, Zack wants a nerf, too."

"Why?" Tahiri asked, blinking at him. "I'd hate to find possibly the only one in this galaxy just for dinner."

She really missed nerf steak, but shh.

"I called it a space cow last night and he thought that was pretty much the greatest thing he'd ever heard," Ben said with a little laugh.

Tahiri slapped a hand over her mouth to muffle the worst of the laughter. "Well, if I ever happen to lift a rock with the Force and find a random, surprise nerf hiding under there, I'll be sure to let him know."

"We're going to breed with his giant chicken," Ben said.

Because that was an excellent plan.

Excuse Tahiri for a moment. She needed to just stare at Ben for a while.

". . . is that even possible?"

Maybe he and Zack shouldn't be allowed to hold an unsupervised conversation.

"I have no idea," Ben said, "but it could be fun to try."

Or nineteen different kinds of a terrible idea.

Tahiri's smile went a little funny. "I suppose," she said, her voice light if a tiny touch strained, "it would be an interesting experiment."

Ben's smile didn't falter, but he sent her a quick pulse of apology through the Force.

"Or I can stick with flying."

"We only have a week for this assignment anyhow," she answered. "So I hope you don't expect your Rookie to be an ace by the end of it. Unless they're secretly related to you."

What an awkward way that would be to find that out.

Ben snickered. "I'm hoping to teach them not to crash into anything stationary. Anything above that is a bonus."

"Oh," Tahiri replied, on more sure footing with the joke this time, "I don't know. That might still be aiming awfully high."

"How long did it take you to learn not to crash?" Ben teased.

Tahiri stuck her tongue out at him. "It's hardly fair if you count the ground as a stationary object." Even though it was.

"Even though it is?" Ben said, laughing.

Tahiri growled something in Tusken that sounded awful but was actually a term of affection that couldn't help sounding awful. "Quiet, you."

"Make me," Ben replied maturely.

Tahiri raised both eyebrows and gave him a challenging look. "Bet I could."

"Bet you couldn't," Ben said smugly.
