Being Marooned [Thursday, May 27]

"Good some time of the day to you all, me hearties!" Jack crowed at his students when they arrived on the beach. (What, like you expected him to know the time? He judged by the sun. If it was up, he figured he was close enough.) He glanced into the sky. "As you can tell, today is going to be a bit of a scorcher, and a good pirate should know how to find shade." He smiled. "Aye, sitting under a tree might work for the short term, but if you are going to be on the island for the rest of your natural--or unnatural, I'm not going to be judging--lives, you might want to invest in something a mite bit more permanent."

He proudly pointed to a huge stack of sticks and palm branches. Um. Don't ask where he acquired them from. He knew a guy. "Today we make shelter!" he announced. "Well, you do. I'm going to take a nap."
vanillajello: (Yeah right.)

Kate paused, and just gave him look that bordered on incredulous. Then she decided that a change of subject was in order.

"Anyway. Think he'd notice or care if we just skipped straight to the tanning?"

"I think we'd need an excuse," Puck replied thoughtfully, smirking at her. "And you're not dressed for building, at least. You'll like, fall out of your top if you bend over too far. Not that I think anyone would mind."
vanillajello: (Talking to T.)

"I would." But she wasn't going to dispute that claim otherwise. Of course not. She shrugged. "I don't know, if we get marooned we'll die so soon anyway that we don't need shelter?"

"Works for me," Puck decided, looking around to pick out some good beach to lie on. "Building shelter's just using up the last of our energy. We should conserve it."
vanillajello: (Smirk.)

"Exactly," Kate agreed, smirking just a bit. "Clearly you have your moments of being smart."

She pointed to a spot a little further away from the palm branches and the other students starting to build stuff. "That looks like a good place to tan."

"Hey! I have like, long moments." That's not a good defense, Puck.

He wandered over to plunk down in the sand, though. "And see, we're no worse off than the others would be. In fact, we're better off. We're going to be tanner and hotter."
vanillajello: (Idle talk.)

"And eventually also dizzier from the heat," Kate had to point out, idly. She sank down on the sand next to him, taking care to make her skirt stay somewhat decent. It wasn't really made for sitting.

"But we're not marooned, so it's just speculation."

"What if we were marooned with water bottles?" Puck replied. "Or those little handheld fans? We'd be fine. If I ever go on a boat, I'm taking both of those things. Just in case."
vanillajello: (Yeah sure.)

"And exactly how long do you think those would last?" Kate wondered as she eased herself down onto her back. "Sure, they'd be good for a while, but... Probably not in the long run."

"Long enough for me to die happy and/or make an SOS sign with rocks," Puck decided. "That usually works in movies."
vanillajello: (All amused at you.)

"Uh huh," she replied, shading her eyes with her hand so she could peer at him. "Because real life works like the movies."

"Because this place is so much like real life?" he countered.
vanillajello: (Idle talk.)

"As far as life and death goes."

Kate should get a medal for how indifferent she sounded about that, considering her issues with the topic.

"Also, it's kinda unlikely we'll get marooned here," she added. "So Fandom rules probably wouldn't apply."

"Fair, but I doubt either of us is gonna get marooned in the Midwest," he pointed out, eyeing her.
vanillajello: (Talking to T.)

Kate snorted. "You say that like I'm going to be spending much more of my time in the fucking Midwest." She shook her head, still squinting at him. Sunglasses. Next week she'd bring them. "But yeah. No getting marooned in Kansas."

"You're not going back after graduating?" he asked, arching a brow.
vanillajello: (Sitting and looking to the left.)

"Well, I haven't really thought that far ahead yet," she admitted. "But I can't really see good old Overland Park being my first choice, no."
