Being Marooned [Thursday, May 27]

"Good some time of the day to you all, me hearties!" Jack crowed at his students when they arrived on the beach. (What, like you expected him to know the time? He judged by the sun. If it was up, he figured he was close enough.) He glanced into the sky. "As you can tell, today is going to be a bit of a scorcher, and a good pirate should know how to find shade." He smiled. "Aye, sitting under a tree might work for the short term, but if you are going to be on the island for the rest of your natural--or unnatural, I'm not going to be judging--lives, you might want to invest in something a mite bit more permanent."

He proudly pointed to a huge stack of sticks and palm branches. Um. Don't ask where he acquired them from. He knew a guy. "Today we make shelter!" he announced. "Well, you do. I'm going to take a nap."

Kate was going more the 'staring blankly' route. And looking around to see whether she could convince Puck or one of the other guys to do all the work for her.

She was wearing the same costume as the two previous weeks. That might actually help her in this endeavor.

Puck was also wearing the same costume! Which, really, was no costume from the waist up. He lifted his eyepatch to give the palm fronts, and then Kate, a skeptical look. "Wouldn't we just sleep in a tree or something? Isn't that what he's doing?" he asked, jerking a thumb at Jack.
vanillajello: (Not really.)

"Maybe he's expecting us to get marooned on an island with no trees," Kate mused. She... hadn't really listened to Jack much beyond knowing what they were supposed to do. "Or that we're dumb enough to cut the trees down just to make shelter."

"But if we're on an island without trees, how can we make a shelter...with trees?" Puck was treating this like a serious question, which it was! He hated riddles.

Miles stared at the palm branches and wished he had some duct tape.

Now this was fun!

Luckily Makita had managed to find an outfit with pants (http://fromtheheartlingerie.com/fth/images/9445_lg.jpg) today that wasn't going to let her chest pop out if she bent over. She quickly grabbed a stack of supplies and set about making a square frame, tying sticks together with parts of palm branches that were already damaged and using the rest to tie-in as thatching. A lean-to was probably fastest to build for this, given the amount of time for class.

Christian had opted for a rather minimalist take on his costume this week -- pants, scarves and boots, but no shirt. He stacked a few palm branches together to make a primitive bed, then lounged on the pile. He had no need for a roof.

"Dude, why didn't I think of that?" Puck called from where he was lounging nearby in the sand. "It's like a little bed. Smart as hell."

"It is, isn't it?" Christian sounded proud of himself. "If we're in the tropics, it's not like we have rain to worry about."

There was sunburn, but his pasty English skin would find out about that soon enough.

Kurt stared blankly at the palm fronds. "Aren't you supposed to tell us HOW to build the shelter?" he asked.

"Oh! Oh! I know! Listening to you."

There, problem solved.

Helen sighed and set to work. She had built shelters from less. Of course, then she'd had Jamie around to help - or for her to pick on.

Bruce got to work quickly and used his time efficiently. He spent a few minutes stripping the leaves from several stipes so he could use them to bind the full fronds together. Inside of fifteen minutes, he had a reasonably large teepee with enough room for a couple people.
