Ocker 101 - week two - period four [Friday 21/05]

When they walked into the Danger Shop, the students would find themselves in the Australian bush. Mick was leaning against a gum tree, watching them from under his hat.

"G'day and welcome to the bush. Not the real bush, mind, cause I reckon you lot'd end up dead right quick, but the blokes in the office did a good job setting this up. Today you're gonna learn about critters, and how a bunch of them can kill you. Even these little blighters." He reached down and picked up an adorable platypus, holding it out for the class to see. "Poisonous spurs in his feet. Even if it doesn't kill you, it hurts so bad you'll wish you were dead." He grinned. "Mate of mine reckons they're cute, but don't let that fool you. Just cause somethin's cute or looks harmless, don't mean it won't see you dead. And just cause it's ugly don't mean it'll hurt you. Not a bad lesson to learn, that."

He put the platypus down and it waddled away into the billabong with a offended splash. "Now, I could give you a lot of books or spend my time telling you all about them, but that's no fun." Another grin. Be afraid. "Instead, you're gonna meet a bunch of Aus' critters face to face. Now, the Outback has got more'n its fair share of things that'll kill you, but its not the only place. What you've gotta do is watch, listen, stay sharp. Look at how things move, how they act. You know what something's gonna do, you can stay out of trouble, but if you wanna know that, you've gotta pay attention. Don't just react. Think'n then act."

He hit a button and a door appeared. "Off you go, one at a time 'cause I wanna see what you do on your own. When you're done just say 'hooroo' and the door'll appear. No worries, nothing will actually hurt you, but still, try'n stay outta trouble."

[OOC: WARNING. THERE WILL BE SPIDER ICONS IN THE THIRD THREAD. And other animals, but the spiders are truly horrifying. OCD has been achieved. Have at it. Plz wait for the OCD.]

Cara might have spent most of the previous night attacking flowers, but she didn't look worse much for the wear.

Still, she perked up slightly at the 'cute but deadly' parts of the lecture.

Jonas found himself a little nervous about this lecture, real or not. Most things made him nervous though so he dismissed it and tried to concentrate on the excitement part of getting to learn about new animals up close.

Clark tried focusing on whatever those words coming out of Mick's mouth could possibly mean for class and his performance today, though he was a little torn into glancing dildo girl's way. Uh, he should probably think of her as Cara now. Maybe.

For her part, Cara wasn't so much ignoring Clark as not seeing any pressing reason to acknowledge his presence.

And silently thanking the spirits that he didn't seem to have any flowers on him.

...if there was a cave, James would not go in. Just listening to the lecture made sneaking around a moredhel camp sound more healthy.

Through the door you go

Once through the door, the students would find themselves in among the gumtrees (http://ahsoproductions.com/db5/00446/ahsoproductions.com/_uimages/GhostGumTrees-Australia.jpg), with a stretch of water off to the right (http://www.johnfredericks.com/mezoweb/uploads/101/102/207/mangrove_beach.jpg), and a red dirt track passing through the middle. It was hot, dry, and very still, silent but for the occasional cry of distant birds (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6OLm4Lp5oQ&feature=related), some of which sounded like mocking laughter (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UD3k1YTUz4Y). Walk through the trees or climb them, go down to the water and dabble your toes, follow the track or just wander wherever.

[OOC: Once your kid's through the door I'll throw animals at them. Mod whatever you need to landscape-wise: rock to jump on, big stick to smack stuff with, etc etc. The animals can't hurt anyone but some will act as if they can. Some will just be wilfully adorable. When you've had enough, say 'hooroo' and mod your exit appearing.]

Cara walked warily through the door, her eyes taking in the landscape. It reminded her of the Midlands, but not quite.

It was browner for a start.

A goanna, one very large lizard indeed, lifted its head, tongue darting out several times as it focussed on the interloper.

It started to move, heading straight for her, speeding up as it got closer.

Oh, Edmund really did not like this. He much preferred animals who you could have a rational conversation with, or at least understood the meaning of 'no, don't kill me, I'm your king, really.'

He calmly walked down towards the water.

The water really was lovely this time of year. Or it would be, if not for the nine foot lizard lounging on the bank, half in and half out of the water.

One cold reptillian eye opened, focussing on lunch Edmund.

Seriously, the gum trees immediately had Clark humming something about kookaburra's. Humming was a good distraction from the thoughts churning in his little alien brain.

The humming attracted the attention of a large white bird. A loud and racous cry announced its presence and suddenly a cockatoo flew down out of a tree to land in the dirt in front of Clark.

To all appearances bumbling and comically harmless, it lifted its crest, twisted its head around so it was looking at Clark upside down, and started sidling sideways along the ground towards his foot.

Jonas pushed open the door, hopefully prepared for whatever animal he might encounter. Maybe his lack of knowledge would even benefit him here. If he didn't know what something was, he wouldn't freak out.

Robin certainly took a careful look around when he walked through the door. Part of that was admiring the scenery though.

Jimmy waited for an attack.

Well. He had walked through the door and lived. Now he was making sure nothing could sneak up behind him or above him; he held on to a nice stick he found right by the path, making sure that it couldn't kill him first.

Edmund was, in fact, wondering how he ended up as TA to the madman in the Akubra. Though after this class, he would have a new-found respect for anyone who had to live with these creatures scurrying about.

My horrifying spider story: there I am, innocently cantering my horse down the trail, when we went right through a GIANT SPIDERWEB stretched right across the trail. The web had a GIANT SPIDER which was now on my face. I freaked out, dropped the reins, the horse bolted and I ended up ripping off my shirt after the GIANT SPIDER went down it. This was not a good time at all.
