The Great Outdoors | Friday | Period 1

When given the choice of being inside or outside, Fraser was always going to choose outside and that held true for his class as well. Today, the class was meeting down near Serenity Cove. There were no desks, no chairs, no nothing. Just one teacher, one deaf wolf, and his students.

"Good morning," Fraser said, sounding far more chipper than usual if that was possible, "and welcome to The Great Outdoors. I am Constable Benton Fraser and most of you may know me already. I'm usually the head of school security but I've also decided to teach this term. I hope you all enjoy being outdoors because it will take some rather intense circumstances to send us back into the classroom. There's far too much to do out here than there is in there."

Fraser grinned and started a slow pace, hands behind his back. "We're going to start easy today, though. This class is intended to teach you that the outdoors is more than just what you can see. There's far more than just looking at the grass, seeing animals move through the trees and feeling the wind in your hair. That's superficial and, while important, is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. There's incredible amounts of wonder and beauty if you take the time to look hard enough and to wait. Patience and time. We have that."

Someone was a bit excited about this course. Could you tell? I bet you could. "Today, we're going to start simple. We're going to introduce ourselves and then I want to walk along this area and make a note of something you hadn't noticed before. It can be anything. It can be specific or general, silly or not. It's just a simple exercise to turn your focus to seeing more than meets the eye. So, with that said, I am Constable Benton Fraser, I am a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, working a a liaison, and I've eight dogs, including Diefenbaker," he said, motioning to the wolf at his side, "and I've lived on this island for over three years. Name, class and any one fact you'd like to tell me about yourself. Go ahead."

Lion-o was enjoying being outside. He felt he had lucked out with two outdoor workshops this time around.

Okay, for one thing, this guy was totally not human. That in itself intrigued Ariel a great deal, but not nearly as much as the second thing.

Which was the fact that they had almost exactly the same color hair. Trying not to distract to much from the lecture, Ariel tried to get his attention a little, pointing to her head and then offering up a thumbs up. His even looked pretty flowy and manageable, too!

Lion-o was at that age where he could be easily distracted by a very pretty girl, so it didn't take very long for him to notice that she was giving him a thumbs up. He responded with a huge grin.

One nice thing about being mute was that you didn't have to worry about getting caught talking in class. However, you upped the chances of getting caught by gesturing.

Still, she felt it was important. She didn't have access to her old methods of hair care, so she'd have to consider more land bound options, and he might know so. She had no way of asking if he used any product, but she could at least confirm her approval.

I--point to her eye--like--thumbs up--your--point to him--hair--ruffling her own..

Lion-o continued to stare at Ariel with a goofy grin. While he saw her gestures, he didn't quite get the whole message. She likes me, he thought to himself.

Oh, that was helpful. Ariel waited a second for a response other than a grin, didn't get it, and tried a different approach.

Haaaair, she thought as she ruffled through her own a little bit more. What do you put in it? Pointing, pointing, like putting in seaweed or jellyfish jelly. She wanted to make sure she didn't lose her vibrancy on land.

It took a while, but eventually Lion-o realized that the pretty girl was trying to ask him something. He looked a little puzzled before it finally dawned on him. "Oh!" he whispered, not wanting to interrupt the lecture. "Yeah, it's my natural hair color. I really was born with it."

There we go! Ariel grinned, glad to hear the answer. Her hands went to her chest: me, too! And she finally understood, seeing it on someone else, where everyone was coming from on the whole vibrant thing.

Lion-o smiled in response, glad to see that he had answered her question. At least, he hoped he'd answered her question.

"Are you a new student? I don't think I've seen you around before," he asked quietly. He was certain he would have remembered seeing a girl as pretty as she was.

Ariel's head bobbed in the usual nod to answer that question, and she passed her index card over his way to explain her current voiceless predicament. So he basically got a preview of the explanation before everyone else.

Lion-o read the card, and then he read it a second time with a frown. "You can't talk at all? That has to be very difficult," he said, handing the card back to her.

Ahhh, the great human outdoors! Already, Ariel was a big fan, taking in a deep breath of air and sighing it out as she looked admirably at the scenery. But she tried not to look too admiringly; she wanted to pay attention to the lecture, too, but it was hard when she was outside, on land.

But at least there wasn't a boat to distract her this time, too.
