The Great Outdoors | Friday | Period 1

When given the choice of being inside or outside, Fraser was always going to choose outside and that held true for his class as well. Today, the class was meeting down near Serenity Cove. There were no desks, no chairs, no nothing. Just one teacher, one deaf wolf, and his students.

"Good morning," Fraser said, sounding far more chipper than usual if that was possible, "and welcome to The Great Outdoors. I am Constable Benton Fraser and most of you may know me already. I'm usually the head of school security but I've also decided to teach this term. I hope you all enjoy being outdoors because it will take some rather intense circumstances to send us back into the classroom. There's far too much to do out here than there is in there."

Fraser grinned and started a slow pace, hands behind his back. "We're going to start easy today, though. This class is intended to teach you that the outdoors is more than just what you can see. There's far more than just looking at the grass, seeing animals move through the trees and feeling the wind in your hair. That's superficial and, while important, is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. There's incredible amounts of wonder and beauty if you take the time to look hard enough and to wait. Patience and time. We have that."

Someone was a bit excited about this course. Could you tell? I bet you could. "Today, we're going to start simple. We're going to introduce ourselves and then I want to walk along this area and make a note of something you hadn't noticed before. It can be anything. It can be specific or general, silly or not. It's just a simple exercise to turn your focus to seeing more than meets the eye. So, with that said, I am Constable Benton Fraser, I am a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, working a a liaison, and I've eight dogs, including Diefenbaker," he said, motioning to the wolf at his side, "and I've lived on this island for over three years. Name, class and any one fact you'd like to tell me about yourself. Go ahead."

Lion-o was enjoying being outside. He felt he had lucked out with two outdoor workshops this time around.

Okay, for one thing, this guy was totally not human. That in itself intrigued Ariel a great deal, but not nearly as much as the second thing.

Which was the fact that they had almost exactly the same color hair. Trying not to distract to much from the lecture, Ariel tried to get his attention a little, pointing to her head and then offering up a thumbs up. His even looked pretty flowy and manageable, too!

Ahhh, the great human outdoors! Already, Ariel was a big fan, taking in a deep breath of air and sighing it out as she looked admirably at the scenery. But she tried not to look too admiringly; she wanted to pay attention to the lecture, too, but it was hard when she was outside, on land.

But at least there wasn't a boat to distract her this time, too.

"I'm Gabrielle," she said easily, with a smile and a spazzy little wave, "I'll be a junior this fall, and let's see, hmm, I've mentioned the bard thing before . . . nope, mentioned that too, and -- hmm, no, now what else . . . ah!"

She held her index finger up and smiled, like you would almost expect her to yell "Eureka!"

She didn't yell that, though.

"I had a pony named Tympani when I was little."

That one was boring, Gabrielle. Sheesh.

"My name is Edmund Pevensie," he started. "I'm a rising senior." He'd heard that term used in the other workshops. "Since we're talking about horses," and since he'd been told it was interesting, "my best friend is a horse. His name is Phillip."

"My name is Lion-o, and I just finished my sophomore year," he began. "And it's pretty obvious that I'm not from this planet. I'm originally from a planet called Thundera where we didn't have a lot of water or vegetation."

"Blysse Norwood," Firekeeper introduced herself. "And he is Blind Seer," she rested a hand on the back of the very large wolf by her side. "We is juniors now," at least that was easier to define than 'how old are you?'. She paused, considering what else to add. She could go along the lines of the others so far and talk about the Wise Horses... In the end, though, she went with: "We growed up outside, in woods," because she liked how it tied in with the class.

Ariel had two classes earlier in the week and she knew she had two classes today, so she'd made sure she'd come to these ones prepared and ready to copy-pasta. The nametag had all but disintergrated by now, but she had with her a handy little notecard, which she now presented to the teacher and to be passed around. On it was written:

"My name is Ariel, and I can't talk. No, I wasn't born this way. Yes, it will get better. But right now I haven't got a voice, so hello and I'm very happy to be in this class!!! =D Thank you!!!"

"I'm Lindsay Weir, and I'm going to be a junior," she told the class. After a moment to think of a fact to share, she added, "I'm from the past. It's 1981 back home."

"My name's Alice Cullen, I'm a junior, and..."

Okay, what fact could she share here? Ooh, she knew!

"I'm married."

"Puck," he said, holding up a hand in greeting. "I'm a junior, and I play the guitar."

Such a pleasant soul to interact with.

To be fair, Gabrielle hadn't seen that particular shell before; it had just washed up that morning, and it was shiny, and she couldn't help picking it up.

And promptly losing the next ten minutes to an overly poetic internal monologue about the way the colors came out differently depending on what angle the light hit the shell from.

It meant she tripped over a rock jutting out of the sand, and tumbled less than gracefully face-first into the beach.

. . . she hadn't noticed that rock before. Duly noted now.

...Mister Fraser did realize that, for Ariel, everything around her consisted of things she hadn't noticed before because she'd lived almost the entirety of her life under the sea, didn't he?

Oh, wait, that's right. He didn't.

Easy assignment for Ariel, then! Ha! Bouncing a little on her toes, Ariel was happy to look around (trying to spot litter to slip into her pockets, mostly), and just tried to spot something that didn't make her seem too obviously from a different world. It was the cove, so that narrowed it down before. There was a bit more of a blurred line here.

Still, she probably could have chosen better than grass poking out of the sand, which she now stroked her fingers through like it was hair or sea weed.

Firekeeper was here! As was Blind Seer, who... probably wasn't as amenable as Dief was as far as petting was concerned. At least, not until he got to know you, and then he would shamelessly angle for ear-scritches.
