The Great Outdoors | Friday | Period 1

When given the choice of being inside or outside, Fraser was always going to choose outside and that held true for his class as well. Today, the class was meeting down near Serenity Cove. There were no desks, no chairs, no nothing. Just one teacher, one deaf wolf, and his students.

"Good morning," Fraser said, sounding far more chipper than usual if that was possible, "and welcome to The Great Outdoors. I am Constable Benton Fraser and most of you may know me already. I'm usually the head of school security but I've also decided to teach this term. I hope you all enjoy being outdoors because it will take some rather intense circumstances to send us back into the classroom. There's far too much to do out here than there is in there."

Fraser grinned and started a slow pace, hands behind his back. "We're going to start easy today, though. This class is intended to teach you that the outdoors is more than just what you can see. There's far more than just looking at the grass, seeing animals move through the trees and feeling the wind in your hair. That's superficial and, while important, is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. There's incredible amounts of wonder and beauty if you take the time to look hard enough and to wait. Patience and time. We have that."

Someone was a bit excited about this course. Could you tell? I bet you could. "Today, we're going to start simple. We're going to introduce ourselves and then I want to walk along this area and make a note of something you hadn't noticed before. It can be anything. It can be specific or general, silly or not. It's just a simple exercise to turn your focus to seeing more than meets the eye. So, with that said, I am Constable Benton Fraser, I am a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, working a a liaison, and I've eight dogs, including Diefenbaker," he said, motioning to the wolf at his side, "and I've lived on this island for over three years. Name, class and any one fact you'd like to tell me about yourself. Go ahead."

It took a while, but eventually Lion-o realized that the pretty girl was trying to ask him something. He looked a little puzzled before it finally dawned on him. "Oh!" he whispered, not wanting to interrupt the lecture. "Yeah, it's my natural hair color. I really was born with it."

There we go! Ariel grinned, glad to hear the answer. Her hands went to her chest: me, too! And she finally understood, seeing it on someone else, where everyone was coming from on the whole vibrant thing.

Lion-o smiled in response, glad to see that he had answered her question. At least, he hoped he'd answered her question.

"Are you a new student? I don't think I've seen you around before," he asked quietly. He was certain he would have remembered seeing a girl as pretty as she was.

Ariel's head bobbed in the usual nod to answer that question, and she passed her index card over his way to explain her current voiceless predicament. So he basically got a preview of the explanation before everyone else.

Lion-o read the card, and then he read it a second time with a frown. "You can't talk at all? That has to be very difficult," he said, handing the card back to her.
