Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Hopefully things weren't so awkward before. Maybe things ended up well. Maybe, just maybe, you ended up meeting someone special.

Or you took your shirt off because Layla Miller convinced you it was destiny. But she's a damn dirty liar and well know it.

Rilla had retreated a bit away from the press of the crowd, finding a tree to sit beneath and eat her plate full of strawberries.

Every now and again she'd gaze around, wide-eyed. This school was going to take some getting used to.

"Hullo," Bod greeted when he passed by her while walking through the crowd. "Is the crowd a bit much for you?"

He'd been here a few months now and things like this still got to him sometimes.

She peered up at him from under her hat and nodded shyly. "There's just so many!" she said. "And they're all so," she lowered her voice. "Underdressed. There are boys here without their shirts on!"

Yes, Bod remembered his introduction to that tradition and how he'd gone against it. He smiled easily.

"It's an apparent tradition though not one I can find record of," he explained. "It was new to me too. And I was asked to remove my shirt that first day."

"I don't think they'd ask," Bod promised, shaking his head and trying to sound reassuring. "I've only seen them ask some girls and you could always say no if they did ask. I don't think it'd offend anyone."

It must be admitted that at this moment Rilla Blythe wasn't overly concerned with offending anyone who would ask a lady to remove clothing.

"It's a harmless tradition," he promised, waving a hand in the direction of the crowd. "I promise. Is the picnic all right for you otherwise?"

Bod winced and, before answering anything, asked, "May I sit? Beside you, I mean."

He was gathering quickly that her time period and upbringing was as different as his was for many dissimilar reasons.

"You're welcome," Bod said, taking a careful seat next to her. "I think my tutors from back home would somehow know if I suddenly developed a lack of manners."

Bod brushed his hands together and let them rest in his lap. "This school, I think, is going to be very different from what you know. It was for me too. Being paired with a boy in your room isn't a mistake. It's how this place and this time work."

"Oh, I'm sorry," Bod said, frowning. "I think, if it's really too much for you, you can request a room switch a few weeks into the term but you might be stuck for a little while. Perhaps classes will be enough to distract you?"

"They're not," Bod said, trying to sound reassuring. "I'd only attended public school once and for a very short time before arriving here and I've adjusted fairly well. The classes are...slightly out of the ordinary."

"It's nothing bad," he said quickly, waving a hand. "It's just diverse. Not all classes would be found in regular schools outside of this island. They still teach you but it just might not be something you ever expected to learn in school."

"Of course," he said and rubbed his chin while he thought back to last term. His classes had been fairly straightforward but he knew there were some strange classes. "Oh. I'd heard of a class, last term, of learning how to deal with difficult women."

"I think so," he said, snickering a bit at that look. "It wasn't a course I took but I remember seeing it on the schedule. I'm not exactly sure what was taught so I couldn't tell you much more."
