Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Hopefully things weren't so awkward before. Maybe things ended up well. Maybe, just maybe, you ended up meeting someone special.

Or you took your shirt off because Layla Miller convinced you it was destiny. But she's a damn dirty liar and well know it.

"He wasn't," Rilla said, wrinkling up her nose.

"Oh, I'm sorry," Bod said, frowning. "I think, if it's really too much for you, you can request a room switch a few weeks into the term but you might be stuck for a little while. Perhaps classes will be enough to distract you?"

"I'm not really much of a student," Rilla admitted with a tiny smile. "Are the classes here terribly difficult?"

"They're not," Bod said, trying to sound reassuring. "I'd only attended public school once and for a very short time before arriving here and I've adjusted fairly well. The classes are...slightly out of the ordinary."

"How so?" Rilla asked trepidatiously.

"It's nothing bad," he said quickly, waving a hand. "It's just diverse. Not all classes would be found in regular schools outside of this island. They still teach you but it just might not be something you ever expected to learn in school."

"Could you provide an example?" Rilla replied.

"Of course," he said and rubbed his chin while he thought back to last term. His classes had been fairly straightforward but he knew there were some strange classes. "Oh. I'd heard of a class, last term, of learning how to deal with difficult women."

Rilla's eyebrow arched up. "Really."

"I think so," he said, snickering a bit at that look. "It wasn't a course I took but I remember seeing it on the schedule. I'm not exactly sure what was taught so I couldn't tell you much more."

"I would most anxious to discover what is considered a difficult woman in this place," Rilla replied. "Probably one who refuses to stay in the room she's been assigned."

That made Bod grin a bit before he realized something and frowned at himself.

"I'm sorry, I don't think I introduced myself when I sat down. I'm Nobody." Most of the time, he would have left it there to gauge for reaction but she seemed so new to things in this place and time that he didn't. "Bod for short, though. Hullo."

"I have been so terrible about that today," Rilla said, flushing. "It's very nice to meet you, Bod. I'm Rilla Blythe."

"Hullo Rilla, it's a pleasure to meet you," Bod said, smiling and nodding. "What brings you here? It seems a little out of the way for you, if you don't mind me saying."

"My parents believed that I needed some time in the sun this summer," Rilla replied, "and things at home are a little busy. Besides, all of my other siblings have been on adventures. It was my turn to have one."

"I think I can almost guarantee the adventure part coming true," said Bod, nodding as she spoke. "The time in the sun is something I'm less sure about. This will be my first American summer and I've heard their rather warm."

Rilla wrinkled up her nose. "Half of my family has red hair," she said. "We don't really tan."

"I'm just very pale," Bod said, snickering some. "It's one of the main reasons I don't have my shirt off. The other being I don't really follow the tradition and see no need to remove my shirt."

"Good," Rilla said. "It's unseemly."

Bod smiled down at his lap before he glanced back over at her. "Unfortunately, it does happen quite a lot around here. What will you do if your roommate goes around without his shirt?"

"Squeeze my eyes closed and shriek," Rilla answered promptly.

Because that was a very productive way to approach things.

After a moment, Bod nodded. He couldn't really fault the reaction. It seemed in line with someone who'd never been exposed to that sort of thing before.

"If you lived with a girl, let's say, and she had her shirt off, would your reaction be different?" Bod asked, curious.

Rilla nodded. "I share a room with my sisters. That would be acceptable."
