Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2010, Saturday Early Evening

The sun had just finished setting as guests started to be let onto the lawn. There were chairs set up for friends and family, separated by an aisle that led to another set of chairs set closer to the stage for the soon-to-be-graduates. The air was still pleasantly warm, and the sky was still almost bright, although extra lights had been set up to make sure everyone could see the festivities. Having learned from previous years, there were no garish decorations or potential weapons in sight - just a simple, tasteful setup for the Class of 2010.

To be fair, Rivka was under the impression that Jack was leaving her time for Emma's. It made some things seem more obvious in context.

"You may take it as an insult," she agreed, staying quiet though she winced at the reminder of Jack and Senor de Ulloa. "However I didn't mean it that way."

"He's not leaving for my time, Rivka." She was responding to unspoken thoughts again, but Emma didn't care if it frightened the girl. "He's moving forward, yes, but past me. I'm from ten years ago, and my world doesn't have vampires."

"But apology accepted. Mostly. I am many things, darling, but 'fool' does not rank among them."

"No one here has called you a fool," she said softly, barely looking up from her knees. If she looked up, tears shining in her eyes from the hurt would be visible, and even if this girl could see everything anyway, she wasn't going to give anyone the pleasure.

"Now I broke you." Ugh. This is why Emma didn't even try with the shy ones half the time. They were too squishy.

"Pull yourself together, darling. My bark is usually worse than my bite, unless you actually make me angry."

"I'm not worried about either," she lied instantly, injured feelings turning as her back straightened, eyes still firmly away from Emma. "What you think or don't think doesn't seem to matter, does it. It's what my brother thinks."
