Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2010, Saturday Early Evening

The sun had just finished setting as guests started to be let onto the lawn. There were chairs set up for friends and family, separated by an aisle that led to another set of chairs set closer to the stage for the soon-to-be-graduates. The air was still pleasantly warm, and the sky was still almost bright, although extra lights had been set up to make sure everyone could see the festivities. Having learned from previous years, there were no garish decorations or potential weapons in sight - just a simple, tasteful setup for the Class of 2010.

It took a moment for Isabel to place where she knew the older man from. Then she remembered 'Papa Benecio' from the pictures Savannah had shown her.

"Hi Mr. Cortez," she smiled. "It's a pleasure to finally meet you."

Benecio smiled. "Ah, Isabel, yes? Savannah's surrogate big sister." He extended his hand. "It's a pleasure to meet you as well.."

Isabel took his hand. "I'm sure you're as excited as well are for this. I'm really happy for her."

"As am I," he agreed. "I'm also very proud of her. She's worked very hard for this."

"She has," she agreed, hoping that the overprotective surrogate grandfather wouldn't be too freaked out by any upcoming Fandom wackiness. "Did she tell you anything about the ceremony?"

He gave Isabel a wry smile. "She told me that she would never be in any real danger and not to get 'freaked out' over anything that may happen today. She also informed me that if she got into trouble she would be perfectly all right, as someone in her class wold help her if need be." He lifted an eyebrow at Savannah's friend. "I don't suppose you're going to enlighten me as to what she was talking about?"

While his attention was focused on Isabel, the bodyguard with him was tense and had his eyes fixed on one spot (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/2461230.html?thread=158303022#t158303022) in the crowd.

"Let's just say that Fandom graduations aren't known for being particularly boring," Isabel said cheerfully. "I brought popcorn."

It's funny how some habits don't leave you, even after a few years of relative peace. Always aware of her surroundings, Isabel picked up on the bodyguard's tension and followed his gaze towards the other man. "I'm sorry for seeming nosy, but is there a problem?"

Benecio let out a breath at Isabel's mention of not boring and bring popcorn. "Something tells me that I won't exactly believe that until I see what she was trying not to tell me about."

At Isabel's question, he made the same mistake with her that he often made with Savannah.

"Just someone who should never show his face within miles of my granddaughter," Benecio said as he glanced at Troy. He smiled reassuringly at Isabel. "But don't worry. We won't let that Nast bastard anywhere near Savannah. We'll keep you and her safe, you have my word."

Oh, Benecio.

Yup, don't underestimate the feisty blonde with alien powers. Isabel tried to comfort herself with the thought that at least he didn't pat her on the head. "Nast? Seriously? The bastard's got balls coming here."

She shook her head. "Want me to have Wyatt orb him off to Mongolia or some other place that's not here? Quick and quiet. He'd never know what happened till the camels ran him down."

"Josef Nast, second in command to the head of the Nast Cabal. I don't know what he's doing here and I don't care."

Benecio wasn't exactly sure what she meant by orbing. There were a few things that Savannah hadn't told him about her family from Fandom.

"He's a powerful Cabal sorcerer, Isabel," Benecio said quietly. "Only another sorcerer can deal with him."

"He wouldn't be the first bad guy to turn up here looking to cause trouble only to wind up with his ass handed to him." Which might not be the most reassuring thing for Benecio to hear. But look on the bright side, Savannah was graduating. She'd be leaving soon enough.

"Only another sorcerer? How about a witch who's also an angel? Or maybe a girl from outer space? Or a guy with fire?"

"Have people showed up to hurt before and why hasn't she told us these things? She said she was safe here."

He peered at her trying to decide if she was serious about the people she was describing or not.

"I'm thinking that you're telling me you know people like this?" Because if she did and he could get them to work for him and keep Savannah safe, he'd have to be introduced to them.

"No one's shown up specifically for Savannah that I know of," Isabel replied honestly. "But other people have had problems. That's when the cavalry would get called up, butts would be kicked, names would be taken, and then we'd go to class the next day."

"Savannah's special, no doubt. But the thing is, here she's one of many special people. And everyone looks out for everyone else. But yes," she said. "I do know people like. I'm one of them. Want to take a guess which one?"

Benecio eyed her for a long moment. "You're very brave to tell someone you hardly know any of this." Not that Benecio would ever use that information or do anything but this was someone dear to Savannah.

"And being that Savannah told me that Johnny had plenty of firepower to protect her, I'm assuming that he is the guy with fire."

"Savannah trusts you. I trust Savannah." It was simple straight forward logic.

Isabel facepalmed. Which probably answered the question. "Can I take the Fifth please?" Somehow she thought he'd know about that.

"She's family and I would never willfully betray her trust." Well, unless it concerned getting her away from boys that he didn't think she should be around.

"I thought as much. Well, at least I know that if an Exustio comes after her, he can help defend her until one of us can get to her. Demons are difficult to take out."

Benecio nodded. "Then since she has told me that she has a guardian angel and that he is male, I would assume that you're the girl from outer space."

Isabel was going to get more popcorn and watch him try to get rid of Johnny. It would be an entertaining show of stubborn males.

"That would be me," she nodded. "I'm from Roswell, New Mexico amusingly enough. Despite what they say, it wasn't just a weather balloon."
