The Lawn | Noon Onward!

With graduation festivities occurring over the weekend, the school administration expected most of the graduation guests to begin arriving today. To ensure guests felt welcomed, Barney's student council minions had set up a small gathering on the lawn where the guests could arrive, mingle, and feign relaxation before heading off with their graduates.

Or where they could all hear about how George got the makeouts with his girl the night before. Someone was a little chatty while hefting the tables and chairs that would serve guests well for getting a load off after travel, and Barney thought it was a tale worth sharing. For the hungry and forgetful, there were finger foods and nametags spread out on a long table. It was time to get the all-weekend grad party started!

Jaina hadn't heard anything from home or John, so she was assuming no one was showing. She'd come to grips with it, or at least was pretending like a champ. She was disappointed, but she understood. Sometimes things came up, and it wasn't like she hadn't given her parents warning after warning about coming here now. They probably thought she didn't want them there anyway. She'd live.

Anyway, there were still people to watch, and she might have been hoping to see Luke show. So she found a spot off to the side to keep a lookout and to not look like she was trying to force herself to mingle or anything.

A familiar Force presence probably gave him away before he came into sight. "Jaina!" Luke said, giving her a bright smile.

"Uncle Luke!" she said, grinning broadly and going right in for a hug. "You made it!"

"Barely," he said, hugging her hard, "but I was getting here even if I had to drag Leia, Han, Isolder and Threepio and his damn theme music with me."

Isolder was definitely the tipoff there to where he was in the timeline now. "Dathomir, huh?"

He made a face. "Yeah. Your dad has lousy taste in planets."

"I hear it's not so bad," she said, though she'd be the first to admit that Tenel Ka was maybe not the most unbiased person there.

"Maybe without the Nightsisters," Luke mused, "but it wasn't the best first impression."

Yeah, she remembered them. Luke wasn't done with them, either. "Okay, you've got a point there," she admitted seriously. "But at least you're off the planet?"

Luke nodded, looking relieved. "And Zsinj ~~wtf kind of name is that~~ is dead." He grinned. "And your parents are engaged."

"...That's weird," she decided, trying once again to wrap her brain around that and finding that no, no it wasn't happening.

"I could go back and try to convince your mom to marry Isolder instead..." he threatened.

"No. That's..." Wrong for so many reasons, among them the fact that Jaina herself had almost ended up having to marry the guy. "Just no."

Yeah, after six years of leaving Jaina off on this planet that she hated that kept giving her so much trouble, Han was really going to stay away while his little girl was finally graduating. People could probably say a lot about his parenting skills, but he was gonna be here for that.

"You look like you're looking for something," he greeted her, complete with trademark lopsided smile.

She must have been distracted, if she didn't sense him coming. But it was worth it for the moment of total happiness at seeing him here. "You came!" she cried, immediately throwing her arms around him in a hug.

And people's thoughts on parenting skills aside, that reaction meant he'd done something right.

"Did you think I wouldn't?" he asked, hugging her back.

"Uhh," she said, pulling back. She felt bad about it now, but in her defense, her parents were psychotically busy people. "I did kind of wonder. Sorry. No Mom?"

"Well, after that last message you sent with all the warnings about breaking time and space, your mother figured it would stress you out a lot less if she stayed home," Han explained. "So I'm here with strict instructions to take holos and get her on the comlink if the ceremony's looking to be less than an hour."

Jaina had mixed feelings on that. On one hand, she wished Leia could have shown. On the other, it had to be easier all the way around, and it was going to be less stressful on her, and probably on her poor mom who would have had a stressed-out Jaina getting bossy at her all weekend. Having Han here was kind of a risk in itself but... that was his thing.

"Look at you," she said, with a little lopsided smile of her own, "sounding like a normal dad."

"Yeah, it shocks me too," he admitted. There hadn't been many chances at that since the kids had been little.

Well, Jaina still was.

"This place hasn't changed much," he said, looking around. "Besides being in the wrong state, with a whole other section added to it you can see flying in...

"I told you this place is weird," she reminded him.

"Only about a hundred times." So often that he still didn't know why she kept coming back. "Haven't spotted any of those new faces yet. Looking forward to that." What with the kid version of Luke and a Tahiri who hadn't gone off the deep end and a Ben who wasn't for and a wife who wore backless dresses.

"If I get out of here and manage to keep myself existing in all the realities where I'm supposed to exist, I'll be amazed," Jaina sighed.

"You'll exist. Are you afraid I'm going to meet your mom and she won't want to meet me again?"

Smug? No. Never!

"That's both reassuring and vaguely wrong-sounding," Jaina said slowly. And wanting to change the subject immediately, she asked, "Are you in for the whole weekend?"
