Build Your Own Philosophy, Period 2, 4/12/10

An eight-year-old boy stood in front of the classroom today, as Tyler sat at his desk with a look that was half amusement and half terror on his face.

"Hey, I'm Miles," the boy said. "So I kept coming up with really cool ideas for classes, and Dad kept saying he was teaching philosophy, not science, so we can't make stuff blow up or build anything. And I said that was really boring, and he said too bad. And then I asked if I could teach if I came up with the class discussion topic. And he said sure, 'cause he didn't think I could."

"So I asked if God could make a sandwich so big he couldn't eat it. And he said that was something called the --" Forgetting the phrase, he looked to Tyler for guidance.

"Omnipotence paradox," Tyler supplied, passing around a handout. "We're going back to our discussions of God to talk about the omnipotence paradox."

"Right," Miles agreed. "Ommip'tence pair-docks. And I said that was still gonna be boring, and he said it was my idea and we were doing it." He gestured to the back of the room. "He let me bring my invisible ink kit, too, if anybody wants to do that instead."

Raven had Arella and the demon child with her, and was starting to fret about just how long Anakin would be around, and if he might cause damage to the island before he left.

Joan could sense her friend's discomfort and passed her a note.

It does not feel right disliking my own child, Raven wrote back. She wasn't the type to put a ":(" on her note, but it was implied.

There were kids running around. Waaaay more interesting than Tyler's lecture. Priestly contemplated making a paper airplane out of the handout, but wasn't sure they wouldn't need it for the final or something.

"Daddy, look," Lena said, showing him the inside of her arm. "Cookie!" a fairly nice-if-wobbly cookie picture was right there, done in green and purple.

Sin was busy drawing. Lena was busy drawing... on herself (and glaring at Stupid Anakin). Dinah was busy trying not to fall asleep, and being grateful Sean was with his dad at the moment.

Leto found that it was rather hard to concentrate on class when his three daughters from different universes were all trying to ask him questions. He found that they were all clever in their own way, which wasn't surprising perhaps, but rather tiring.

Joan had to cover Jared's mouth to keep him from blurting out anything about how his mommy *knew* God and could ask all those questions in person.

Making Hobbes sit next to her instead of Daddy, Hypatia carefully started writing with the invisible ink. Her handwriting was slanted and wobbly, but still much more neat than Calvin's had been at the same age.

Still not quite able to wrap his mind around the idea that in the future he had apparently gone completely insane and had a child with Susie (why would you have a kid with your best friend?), Calvin stubbornly sat down next to Hobbes (who was being a horrible furry traitor yet again) and started writing his own message with the ink.

... if you excuse Jak from class for trying to save some people, that is.
