Ethics [Tuesday, March 30, 2nd period]

"You've had a week with your droid babies," Anakin said. "I trust that you've all learned valuable lessons about restraint in the face of lust, or at least the value of good birth control." He gave Bruce a long look. "As well as why babies' heads should stay fully attached." His attention shifted to Illyria. "And how we don't eat them on this planet. Now we'll move on to the last of the seven major sins: sloth. Originally, sloth was described as 'an uneasiness of the mind'," he continued. "Apathy. Melancholy. Joylessness. And importantly, the decision not to do anything about it."

He shrugged. "The modern view understands that the mind is slightly more complicated than that and sometimes it is impossible to will yourself not to be sad. Instead, this sin focuses on the failure to utilize your talents and gifts."

He made eye contact with each student. "In a place filled with as many talented people as this one, I can view it as almost criminal to not live up to the potential each of you has. Today, pair up and talk about what your plans for the future are, and how what you will be doing either over the summer or after graduation will be helping you in what you might think of as your greater destiny."

He rolled his eyes. "You may also use this time to complain about what a horrible person I was to saddle you with fake children for a period of weeks, if you insist upon it."

Leia knew what her plans were; she just needed someone to discuss them with.

"Well, let's hear it," Arthur said.

He wasn't in a particularly charitable mood, but it was possible - possible - that this one would annoy him less than the others.

He was definitely not touching the idea of talking to Illyria with a ten-foot pole.

So charming, Arthur!

"I'm going to represent Alderaan in the Imperial Senate," Leia said, conviction in her eyes, "and work to return peace and justice to the galaxy by restoring the Republic and exposing Emperor Palpatine for the tyrant he is."

Simple, really.

He had buckets of charm. He just chose to choose where he used them wisely.

Ethics class was not it.

"While serving in his senate?" Arthur checked. Not that that was a position he had any kind of experience with. "That'll take some maneuvering."

"The chances of affecting change from within the government are slim," Leia admitted. She knew she had to be careful back home about what she said and did, but here in Fandom, at least, it was a relief to be able to relax her guard and actually talk about things. "But as a senator I will have a consular ship and diplomatic immunity, two things that will come in very handy for more covert activities."

"It will also force you to maintain a double life," Arthur noted. "Aren't you afraid your loyalties might wind up compromised?"

"My loyalties aren't in question," Leia said. "I'm loyal to what the senate was" -- well, minus the corruption, of course -- "before Palpatine had himself declared emperor and turned it into a dictatorship."

"But remaining part of the council might hinge on supporting decisions running contrary to your personal aims," he noted.

"I won't compromise my beliefs," Leia said fiercely. "I will not support any decision that causes harm to the people of my world or any other." Which was precisely what her father was worried about.

"I'm not asking you to," he said, lightly, although he figured she got that already. "It's a noble standpoint, and I'd swear the same." A pause. "That doesn't make it any less dangerous. Or a headache."

"I didn't think you were," Leia said, "but you're right, I could find myself in that position, and I'll deal with it when it happens. Worrying about what-ifs is just going to drive me insane. And I know it's dangerous, but I accept that."

She forced herself to relax, because talking about the emperor always got her riled up. "What about you, what are your plans?" she asked. "Being a prince in your world is different from being a princess in mine." Constitutional Monarchy versus Feudalism and all.

"I will return home and serve my people," Arthur said. It came out matter-of-fact; the hopefully would stay in his head, thank you. "Support my father," and check him, "and when he dies, I will become king, and try to serve with justice and mercy. It's never exactly been a question for me."

"Is that what you really want to do?" Leia asked. "Trust me, I know all about duty, but have you ever wanted to do anything else instead?"

Arthur snorted. "You're hardly the first one here to ask me the question," he said. "It's who I was born to be. I'm hardly going to let my people down just because some flight of fancy has struck me. That's not how it works."

"Not even when you were a child?" Leia said, though she had difficulty imagining Arthur that way. "I hated being a princess when I was younger." Well, she still disliked it sometimes, and looked forward to the title of senator more than the one she'd been given just because of who her parents were.

"I just wanted to be a knight when I was younger," Arthur said, wryly, and tilted his head. "But that was a part of the bargain, too."

Or, you know, 'make his father proud', but that fell under the header of impossible wishes at this point.

"We come from very different worlds but we have the same goal," Leia said. "Protecting our people. And I hope you do as well for your people as I want to do with mine."

Plans? Really, Effy didn't have any, beyond 'probably getting drunk later'. But she was here, and if anyone wanted to discuss her lack of plans (or their own immaculately organized future), they were welcome to try.

Claire wasn't sure if she wanted to tell the truth about her immediate plans to anyone; what with everything going on, she hadn't had much of a chance to work on them.

But she looked for a partner.
