Library, Monday [3/8]

There had been more uncomfortable places to wake up than on a couch in an empty warehouse, and she'd actually liked the outfit, Gabrielle had to admit. It all seemed like a very interesting and helpful profession even if the whole past-lives thing sounded strange, and something about the entire situation felt slightly off in a way she couldn't pinpoint.

Which was why, in between her other duties, Gabrielle's choice of reading material was on the subject of reincarnation. ~~Not that this would save her from future-life-visiting trauma two seasons from now.~~ As the enraptured look on her face might indicate, the subject had definitely caught her fancy.

"Gabrielle," Henry greeted on his way in the door. He had a truly epic headache, but otherwise his weekend hadn't left him much the worse for wear.

Though he was going to have to figure out whose sword he had lost while he was utterly out of his head.

"Talk to me. Do you know Mark Antony?"

... yes, he was asking if she knew him personally. She seemed to know everybody else in the ancient world.

So of course, when there was an actual need to know, she wouldn't. It figured.

"Morning, Mister DeTamble. Mark Antony? The name sounds Roman, but . . ." Gabrielle frowned. "It doesn't sound familiar, I'm sorry."

"Roman politician and soldier, yeah. Probably after your time," Henry said, waving it off. "Don't worry about it. I had some kind of mental break and spent the weekend thinking I was him."

He'd been in Fandom long enough that his tone was one of exasperation that these things happened, not one of flat-out panic.

"You too?" Really, just accepting that these things happened was Gabrielle's only reasonable alternative now. She looked at the cover of the book (http://www.amazon.com/Life-Before-Scientific-Investigation-Childrens/dp/0312321376/ref=pd_sim_b_2) she was reading. "I was some kind of doctor. Or possibly a con artist. I'm not sure where the line gets drawn there, at times."

"I've known a lot of doctors and I am still not sure," Henry said, and glanced at the book. "I'm definitely not ready to start saying I was Mark Antony in a past life. That's a little too much for a skeptic like me."

"I don't know that I believe in them myself, though I think I like the idea," Gabrielle admitted. "But whoever I was this weekend, well . . . I don't think she did, either. Just as long as other people did."

"One of those," Henry nodded. "Sorry I didn't run across her ~~but omg so many threads~~. It would have been interesting to see what somebody like that made of a guy who's supposed to have been dead two thousand years."

"I don't think she would have believed him," Gabrielle decided, oblivious to any irony at work. "She was a pretty shady character, though. That's a little disappointing."

"And Antony turned out to kind of be a bitch," Henry said. "He swore his head off at the police station because they wouldn't give him a sword right away. It's not like we had any control over it, right?"

Gabrielle thought that sounded awfully Roman of him, at least according to all the hearsay she'd ever picked up on her travels. "No, sometimes these things just happen," she agreed with a shrug. "Waking up as someone else entirely, waking up with someone else entirely, it's all pretty normal around here."

"People keep telling me that," Henry said, sounding resigned but not terribly happy about it. "I guess we just live with it, right? And I apologize to whoever's sword I lost."

"And hope they're not terribly attached to it." Gabrielle winced, looking sympathetic. "Because some warriors, let me tell you, you'd think their swords are extra limbs, the way they get possessive about them."

Not helping, Gabrielle.

"Antony was like that. Hopefully whoever it is wouldn't kill a poor, unarmed librarian," Henry said with a straight face.

Besides, he could hold his own, if it came to violence. Or so he'd keep telling himself.

"Whoever it is would have to get past your library aides first," Gabrielle said, deadpan but actually mostly serious. "They'd have no idea what they were really in for."

Henry laughed. "You are a damned deadly lot," he said. "Anyhow, I'm probably going to be abusing the Roman history collection for some personal research today, okay? You know how to find me if you need me."

Gabrielle glanced at her book again and chuckled. "As long as you don't mind my doing personal research along the same lines. If any angry warriors in search of lost swords come in, I'll make sure you have plenty of warning. Besides -- they'll likely be unarmed."

"Unless they're psychic and like to scuba dive," Henry agreed. "The sword's in a pond."

He turned to walk toward his desk, tossing off a cheery, "Enjoy your research."

Now that he is no longer a Roman general.

He was no longer a Roman general, though he had collected a truly impressive stack of books on Roman history. He didn't remember any of the classes he'd taken on the subject covering the fact Mark Antony was kind of a bitch.

I should probably feel worse about missing work on a Monday but I can't bring myself to feel that bad about it, somehow.
