History of Philosophy, 2/8, Period 2

One sees well only with the heart. The essential is invisible to the eyes. -- Antoine St. Exupery

It was, apparently warm-n-fuzzy day in Tyler's corner of the universe. The desks had been pushed out of the way, there were pillows on the floor, and hot cocoa and coffee were out for anyone who wanted them.

It was ... actually a little bizarre in how normal and cozy it was.

"Hey," Tyler greeted. "So the new idiot librarian decided to send over The Little Prince instead of The Prince today. I am going to make the best of it and have you talk about the philosophy of a kid's book."

"Anyhow, so this is a story about a kid who lives on a planet all by himself and spends half the book talking to a rose. Mostly, it's about saying goodbye. The reason it's interesting is there's some philosophical stuff in here. For our discussion question today, I want you to consider the quote on the board. Do you agree or disagree? Talk about it. You can also, if you want, look at what it means when a child is the only person in a story with any sense."

"You mean like interest, interest? Eeeuuugh." Dinah grimaced in disgust. "Um. Sorry. That's just. Gah. I'm glad Professor Skywalker managed to get a hit in, there."

"He cut him in half," Raven said proudly. For once, the violence did not make her feel ill. "But it was only a manifestation, not his true self. And he was not able to stop Professor Skywalker and Karla before they saw Sebastian in Professor Maximus's place in my memories."

"Hunh. So, there are limits to what he can do. At least when he's not on his home turf." Dinah took a breath, looking reassured. "Did you hear back from those ritual guys, with more details about what they want you to do?"

"They merely wish me to act as a focus," Raven said. "Their ritual is a warding, but they have never had a strong connection to my father to focus upon, which may be why it has never worked as they wished."

"But where, and for how long? And is there, I dunno. Bleeding or restraints involved in this focusing? Seriously." Dinah made a face of worry.

"There will be no restraints and no bleeding," Raven said quite firmly. "I will not allow that. It would take place between dimensions, similar to where Azarath lies, and should not take longer than an hour, or so they have told me. I am going to attempt to visit Azarath and see if I can find out more about them."

"That sounds reasonable," Dinah said cautiously. "Do you want company, going back there?"

"To Azarath?" Raven said, looking down at her cup again. She missed her home sometimes, but she had known that when she left to protect Azarath, she could not come back again. "I...I do not know. It might be best if I go alone. I know I will not be harmed there, even if I am seen. To forsake Azarath means never to return, but they would raise no hand in violence against me."

"It still might be hard," Dinah said gently. "But if you think having someone along might make it awkward, then going alone might be best, yeah."

"I will think on it," Raven said. She lifted her gaze to look at Dinah. "Are you offering to go with me if I do decide to bring someone there?"

"Sure. I'd like to see where you grew up." Dinah smiled a little. "And you're my friend. This shouldn't be difficult for you."

"I think you would find Azarath boring," Raven said, but she smiled as well. "But it also is a place of great beauty."
