History of Philosophy, 2/8, Period 2

One sees well only with the heart. The essential is invisible to the eyes. -- Antoine St. Exupery

It was, apparently warm-n-fuzzy day in Tyler's corner of the universe. The desks had been pushed out of the way, there were pillows on the floor, and hot cocoa and coffee were out for anyone who wanted them.

It was ... actually a little bizarre in how normal and cozy it was.

"Hey," Tyler greeted. "So the new idiot librarian decided to send over The Little Prince instead of The Prince today. I am going to make the best of it and have you talk about the philosophy of a kid's book."

"Anyhow, so this is a story about a kid who lives on a planet all by himself and spends half the book talking to a rose. Mostly, it's about saying goodbye. The reason it's interesting is there's some philosophical stuff in here. For our discussion question today, I want you to consider the quote on the board. Do you agree or disagree? Talk about it. You can also, if you want, look at what it means when a child is the only person in a story with any sense."

Raven lounged and listened and watched for Dinah so she could talk to her about what Anakin and Karla had found out about the vampire who attacked her.

And there was Dinah, with cocoa. Convenient, no?

Raven settled beside Dinah, cupping her own cocoa in her hands. "Hello, Dinah," she said. "How are you today?"

She'd been better, but whapping on the practice dummy had helped. "Doing okay. How about you?" She reached out a toe from where she was lounging, and poked Raven's foot lightly. "I heard stuff on the Radio. Wasn't sure how much of it was true, though."

Mmmm, lounging on pillows and drinking cocoa was an awesome class, in Joan's opinion.

...Yeah.

Ino was... just going to stare at Tyler-sensei and wonder if he'd completely lost his mind for this class.

This was creepy coming from him, geez.

Dinah was all about the lounging. Checking on people. Sipping cocoa. Lounging.

Liir was beginning to believe that he wasn't so much a wizard or a warlock or whatever ridiculous name people came up with for people who did magic and happened to be of the male persuasion... but some sort of philosopher gone down the wrong track.

The quote for the day seemed almost perfect to describe his own perceptions. He'd have to remember it for another time.

"I think it kind of makes sense," Joan said. "I mean, it's easy to believe in things we can see, but the things we can't see, we have to take on faith."

"It's pretty depressing, for what's supposed to be a kid's book," Dinah said. "I mean, it's grim about how people act, it's really lonely for a lot of the time, and then the ending... In general, the book says something like 'people who really get how the universe works are surrounded by people who don't.'"

"I agree," he said quite simply, wondering if Tyler might have some manner of apoplectic fit at the idea of Liir giving a simple, straightforward answer to one of his questions that fit the discussion.

"As for what the book says to me, it makes me wonder if the author had visited Oz at any point."

Joan's around and in a great mood after her spa day yesterday.

Liir was here. You just couldn't see him earlier because he was essential to the class.
