Magic for Dummies | Period One | Class Four

There was a spread of coffee, tea and pastries today when the students arrived. Just because Paige felt like they deserved them after the weekend.

Once they were all settled, she wrote on the white board:

GOOD MAGIC vs BAD MAGIC

"Okay, so today we're going to talk about what makes magic good or bad. There's really no easy answer to this question. You might say that bad magic is magic that hurts another being. But if I used magic this weekend to fight off those nasty gremlins, your answer might change. So I want to know what you think is good magic and what you think is bad magic. Feel free to question each other as well."

Raven shook her head. "I am a healer," she said. "Using my gifts to inflict harm is wrong, even to defend myself." If she said it enough, maybe she'd believe it.

"You know, there are people out there who kinda like getting, uh, hurt," Harper pointed out. "So, is it still bad magic if they were asking for it?"

"Oh, this is easy!" said Harper. "Good guys wear light colors and bad ones wear black."

It's a shame she was wearing the black top with the bedazzled collar today.

Paige eyed Harper's top. "Are you sure about that?" she asked. "What if someone is wearing stripes like I am today?"

Harper frowned. "Maybe they're being sneaky and trying to disguise their true colors? Er, not that I think you're secretly evil or anything like that."

"Uhh, I'm guessing bad magic is like... raising zombies and stuff," Hurley said. "You know. The stuff that's all... freaky."

"Can magic be considered 'good' and 'evil'?" Bruce asked after giving the topic some thought. "Or would it be more dependent on the user? How they're using it and what their intent is."

"Maybe a curse that's designed specifically to kill someone, but the intent in using something like that is pretty clear," Bruce said. "Otherwise, I don't think I'm familiar enough with what types of magical powers there are to really answer that question."
