Magic for Dummies | Period One | Class Four

There was a spread of coffee, tea and pastries today when the students arrived. Just because Paige felt like they deserved them after the weekend.

Once they were all settled, she wrote on the white board:

GOOD MAGIC vs BAD MAGIC

"Okay, so today we're going to talk about what makes magic good or bad. There's really no easy answer to this question. You might say that bad magic is magic that hurts another being. But if I used magic this weekend to fight off those nasty gremlins, your answer might change. So I want to know what you think is good magic and what you think is bad magic. Feel free to question each other as well."

"Even if the other being is trying to hurt you first?" Paige asked.

Raven shook her head. "I am a healer," she said. "Using my gifts to inflict harm is wrong, even to defend myself." If she said it enough, maybe she'd believe it.

"So how would you defend yourself then?" Paige asked.

"I am not skilled in defense," Raven admitted. "The only way I should use my gifts in such a case is to attempt to remove the aggression of the person attacking me." Should, but not could.

Paige nodded. "Okay, but what if you get hurt and can't help others?"

"I can heal myself?" Raven said uncertainly. "I must avoid being hurt if I am to be able to help."

"What if you get knocked unconscious?" Paige asked. "Then you can't heal yourself, right?"

"Then I must rely on others to save me," Raven said, "for I would be unable to flee to safety."

"Do you think there is any time you can use your magic against someone that it wouldn't be bad?" Paige asked.

Raven shook her head. "Not to cause harm," she said. "I cannot do that."

"What about other people?"

Yes, Paige was pushing a little. Partly for discussion and partly out of curiosity.

"What do you mean?" Raven asked. "Can other people use their powers to cause harm? That is between them and their own beliefs. I was raised a pacifist, but I have learned to accept that sometimes violence is necessary to protect oneself or others. But it is not something I can use my gifts to do; that is a perversion of them."

"I should introduce you to my brother-in-law," Paige said. "He's a pacifist too."

Well, he was. Until Gideon betrayed him. But that was a different story.

It took a moment for Paige to realize what Raven was talking about. "Ah, no. In my reality, Phoebe and Cole aren't married. I was talking about my sister Piper's husband, Leo, though."

"I apologize," Raven said. "Phoebe told me she was involved with a demon when we met, and I assumed...." She was still weirded out by the demon thing.

"You know, there are people out there who kinda like getting, uh, hurt," Harper pointed out. "So, is it still bad magic if they were asking for it?"

Raven turned red, remembering her life as Mistress Raven. "It is still a perversion of my gifts," she said.
