Ethics [Tuesday, January 12, 2nd period]

"Today we discuss lying," Anakin said as he closed the classroom door precisely on time. "Everyone lies. 'Of course that doesn't make your butt look big.' 'You like her, I like her.' 'I'm totally okay with you moving on.' 'Everything's fine, why do you ask?' It's how the world goes around because no one wants to be trapped in a conversation where someone whines at you for hours on end about how awful their life is."

He looked around the room. "Trust me. Everyone's life is terrible. They're just not telling you about it. Be grateful."

He reached onto his desk for a piece of paper. "Today we're conducting an exercise to see how well you pass this particular social ritual, then we'll discuss whether you think it is necessary. We're playing two truths and a lie. I'll tell you three things about myself and you have to decide which one is the falsehood. Then you'll all tell three things and we'll see how well you can either read each other or keep things hidden."

He gave them a small smile. "I'm very good at this." It had taken him a very long time to come up with things that Leia either wouldn't know or shouldn't know, but that was hardly the point, was it? He schooled his face to absolute neutrality, put his mental blocks up to bar any psychics in the room from gaining an advantage, then said: "I have never lost a lightsaber duel. I hate sand. I can fly any ship I ever sat at the controls of." His eyes challenged them to call him out. "Who's next?"

Based on what your character knows of Anakin, which doesn't seem right?

"I'd say it's the duel one," Bruce said. "Hating sand is a minor detail that doesn't seem worth lying about. And if you can pilot one ship, it would be reasonable that you could adapt to another one. But it's been drilled into me that no matter how good you are, there's always someone better." Bruce had yet to disprove that notion, so he was willing to believe it for the time being. "So what are the odds that you've never fought someone better?"

Bod didn't know what lightsabers were exactly besides some sort of weapon and while the teacher looked to be very skilled, there always seemed to be someone better. Someone always had the chance of beating you.

"I think the first one is a lie though the one about hating sand could be right too." It was a bit of indecision, yes.

Bruce was admittedly guessing based on what he knew of Layla: she was creepy, but she knew stuff. Two of her statements involved future knowledge, but she didn't seem dangerous enough for the second one to be true.

"I'd say the bathtub statement is a lie," Bruce said.

"How can you know who you'll marry already?" Bod, obviously, had not met the girl who knows stuff so the answer seemed easy.

Leia had to fight not to roll her eyes. "My father is a senator and my mother is a queen, my best friend's name is Summer, and I once dropped a water balloon on a high-ranking government official."

She may have been a teeeeeny bit petty with that first one, but she was still cranky about last week.

"Dropping a water balloon on a high ranking government official seems like it wouldn't be possible to do," Bod decided even if he had the sneaking suspicion he wasn't very good at this game. "From what I've heard, it'd be hard to get something like that past everyone."

Claire assumed Leia was referring to her adoptive parents with the senator and queen thing. Even still, it struck her as odd given that the majority of her experience was with the American government.

"I think the first one is a lie because it seems to be a contradiction," she said. "Senators are part of a democratic government and Queens are part of a monarchy."

Two lies and a truth would be easier for Bruce, honestly, but he felt he managed to come up with some truths that wouldn't disturb anyone. "I can speak Japanese fluently. My favorite movie is It's a Wonderful Life. I once set a high score in an arcade on a dancing video game."

Bod remembered Bruce from the common room but even that conversation hadn't made it easier to pick out the lie. If there had been a lie about baking soda, that would have been easier.

"I think the second one is a lie," he decided, using the fact that he knew Bruce liked to be prepared as a basis for that. With that, he thought he'd learn languages and even dancing if he had to.

"I have been my kingdom's tournament champion for the past three years," Arthur said, racking his brain for a few things. "I own two pets." One more. Come on, brain. "I once tracked a stag for ten full days."

Calvin didn't even have to think before coming up with his.

"I've been to Mars, my best friend is a girl, and I've travelled to the time of the dinosaurs."

It took Bod a few moments to come up with the required truths and a lie. It was harder than he'd thought, digging something out that wasn't all too obvious.

"I've met the Lord High Mayor of London--" He'd just been a ghoul at the time. "--one of my first friends was a witch and I was the top student at my last school."

Bod thought those were sufficient. While he hadn't called Liza Hempstock a friend at the time, he knew now that she was more friend than anything else.

"Uh, let's see," Griff had to think a bit to make all of his items sound like they could be true. "I've lived on my own since I was twelve, hate cats, and I own a boat."

Effy considered a moment before she went with, "My real name's Eleanor, I got expelled from my last two schools, and I once stopped talking for two years, just because I could."

Easy for Anakin, because he'd probably seen her paperwork, maybe less so for everyone else.

Jacob considered saying three truths, but it wasn't like he'd be able to get them spoken.

"I'm the Chief's son, I've built my own car and I've jumped off a cliff," Jacob said, perhaps cheating a little bit.

Zack gave a little grin to the class at large, as Zack was wont to do. Coming up with a lie had been hard.

Illyria had no moral compunctions against... anything, really, but definitely not lying. She just found the need to do so a weakness when it came to leadership. So: no issues with telling lies about herself.
