Business 102: Friday, Period 3, Class 1

As his students wandered in, Jim possibly started to have second thoughts about this class topic. Sure, office work was horrible. But there really was a lot to be learned and experienced from working in a business. Maybe, just maybe, he should rethink things and give a different view of the business world.

But that would require coming up with a new syllabus, so Jim just went ahead with the class he had planned.

"Good morning and welcome to Business 102. I'm Mr Halpert, but a couple of you already knew that. What you probably didn't know is that before I came to Fandom, I was one of the top salesmen for a mid-sized paper supply company based in northeast region of the US. I was actually just about to transfer from the Scranton, Pennsylvania branch to the Stamford, Connecticut branch with a promotion to Assistant Regional Manager before I remembered that I really didn't want to turn a job at that company into a career. And taking a promotion is a convenient way to do just that."

"The basic point is that I really didn't like working there, but I did it for years thanks to a combination of doing as little work as possible, getting other people to help me not do work, being good enough at my job to not get fired, and having the least productive boss in the world. And except for that last one that you just need to get lucky with, I'm here to teach you all of that to help you survive at a crappy, crappy office job that you might end up having."

"So, let's start by doing introductions just like you've done every other day this week. And while you're telling everyone your name and class, go ahead and also tell us what career you think you'll have after school."

"Oh, and don't mind the camera guy. It's his job to film me working."

You will never be quizzed on where Jim worked before.

Bobby had... okay, he'd actually intended to take notes. But they ended up being doodles.

Katchoo was not, of course, taking a single damn note. She was doing her best to keep a piece of paper between herself and the camera guy, on the other hand. Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

Angela was still not impressed with him. She couldn't be impressed with anyone who told impressionable teenagers who already had problems slacking off about how he slacked off. So irresponsible.

Mat decided that taking notes in here would defeat the whole spirit of the class.

Jack kept staring at the film crew...and wondering if he could get them into the Photo Hut and make some crazy sales. Notes? What notes? They were prices on the camera equipment.

Introduce yourself! Name, year, future job.

"Bobby Drake, sophomore, and I'm going to be an accountant ~~except for when I'm a superhero~~." He didn't sound particularly excited nor unenthusiastic about this fact. It just kind of... was.

"A highly respectable career choice. Without you, a lot of people would have to do their own taxes," Jim noted. "Do yourself a favor and don't work for a mid-size regional paper supply company, though."

"Hi, I'm Jill McTeague, I'm a senior, and...I don't really know what I'll do after this yet."

"Are you thinking about college? Because that's a great way to put off figuring out your future for a few years," Jim said.

"Yes, that is exactly how I approached college," Jim told the camera guy. He made a face. "Big surprise, isn't it?"

"Kind of?" she said. "I haven't really decided yet. I mean, I want to go to college. Like, eventually." Yes, Jill wasn't even ready to pick a college, never mind a career. It was that bad.

Big ol' sigh there that Katchoo heaved. This was hopefully the last time she had to do this, right? At least he wasn't asking why they were in this class, since she'd had nothing to do with signing up for this one either, or what experience if any they had with business because hi, not explaining how she knew about pulling off a corporate takeover.

"Katina Choovanski, senior." She drummed her fingers idly on the table. "I'm an artist. What job?"

"You might end up needing some kind of job to pay the bills while you're working on your art," Jim said. "I've seen it happen."

Katchoo just shrugged. "Yeah, happens. Figure in that case I'll just sell an organ."

Just not her liver. That wouldn't do anyone any good except maybe in the name of science.

"My name is Angela Martin, I'm a junior, and I don't know what my future job is yet except that it will suit me and I will take it seriously. You'd think a paycheck would help others do this. Apparently not." Not that that was said pointedly or anything.

Slacker teacher.

Jim smiled and nodded at the camera. "You'd think so, wouldn't you? Just remember, there's nothing wrong with barely meeting the minimum requirements of your job. Unless you want a promotion and an actual career."

"Mat Cauthon, senior, and I'm hoping I can turn being a gambler into something full time," Mat replied lazily.

Assuming the world didn't end in the next few years, of course.

"Do you ever watch ESPN? They have professional poker on all the time," Jim noted. "You'll probably need a regular job to finance that for a while, though."

Mat's eyes lit up. "That's a real career here?"

His mother would be appalled.

"Well, most of them end up being broke and sad, so I'm not sure it's the best job to shoot for," Jim said. "But yes, there is."

"Jack Burton, and I'm going to be hands-on involved in the transportation industry," he said, ear-to-ear grin.

"Could you be more specific?" Jim asked. His first thought was pilot or train conductor or something like that.

"Trucker," Jack said with a smile. "Own my own business."

Jim needed a TA. Picking someone he knew from Dunder-Mifflin didn't work out so great last time, so he was just going to pick the other person he knew from last semester. "Oh and Bobby? you're the TA."

That was easy.

"...Me?" Bobby's voice absolutely did not squeak at that announcement. Really.

Well. This was a new and completely unexpected development.

"Yes, you," Jim said. "You don't have a problem with that, do you?"

Jim was here at the end of class, ready to take any on questions.

Preferably not ones about how you had a crush on him when he was a student here, though. Because that was strange.

I'm going to be afk Friday evening due to people who didn't even bother signing up for my class will be dragging me to dinner. They should be ashamed of themselves.

I'll pick up tags either while waiting for them, after they leave, or on Saturday.
