Anakin walked into his classroom precisely on time and gave the students assembled there an appraising glance--lingering a moment on a few faces--as the door clicked shut behind him. If you were late, you weren't getting in. "I'm Master Anakin Skywalker," he said in a voice that was intended to carry, "this is Ethics, and we're going to skip the introductions--I'll figure out who you are, if I don't recognize you already--and move straight to our first discussion."

He paced around the room, cloak flaring out behind him, as he handed out the syllabus. "Today's topic," he said, pointing to the top of the page. "Self sacrifice: knowing the difference between saving people and being a pretentious twit."

"Any time I ask a a group of people what they would do to save someone they love, they all blither on about how they would set the world on fire, lie, cheat, steal, kill, die, et cetera, et cetera. I've been at this school too long to believe that half of you haven't already been put into this situation and I'm in no mood to hear adolescent ramblings about how wonderful you were or might hypothetically be. Instead I want you to give me a concrete example of a time you admitted to yourself that a problem cannot be solved, and that sacrificing yourself wasn't a statement, but was merely pointless." His gaze swept the room. "How long does it take for you to realize you can't fix everything by yourself? Have you ever learned that lesson?"

"We brought justice and truth," Anakin corrected. "That's not always the same thing."

"You don't think justice and fairness go hand in hand?" Leia said. Truth and fairness, definitely not, not today at least.

"It all depends on your point of view, doesn't it?" Anakin said. "I'm weighing the consequences of disappointing my daughter against the possibilities of her using new information to get herself killed. I'll take the disappointment."

That made a certain amount of sense, but she wasn't about to admit it. "I'm not planning to broadcast it to the Outer Rim," she grumbled.

"I'm not going to tell you," Anakin repeated.

"Then I'll find out some other way," Leia said stubbornly. "I won't let you keep this from me."

"Or you can wait," Anakin replied just as stubbornly. "Learn patience."

Because Skywalkers were so known for that quality.

"I've had the truth hidden from me for my entire life," Leia said, arms crossed. "I don't intend to wait patiently any longer for it."

"Do you think it was just because adults like to keep secrets?" Anakin demanded. "There was a reason for it. And it's a good one."

"And I'm old enough to understand now," Leia shot back. "I can keep a secret, too. Especially one that involves me."

"No," Anakin said firmly. "The Empire is already paying far too much attention to Alderaan."

"Fine," Leia said in that tone of voice that clearly said it wasn't. "Then I guess we're done here. But let me say one thing -- you don't have any say over who I spend my time with outside of class."

What was he going to do? Ground her?

"Oh, you are very wrong about that," Anakin said, "and feel free to bitch with Jaina about it."

"I'd like to see you try and stop me," Leia challenged.

"Oh, you really don't want to push me on this," Anakin said, flashing teeth in a predatory sort of smile.

"You may have fathered me," Leia said, trying to look so very imposing despite her height, "but you're not my father. You don't get to tell me what to do."

"Wrong again," Anakin replied. "You don't have to listen--though I'd recommend it--but it's one of the privileges I get."

"Your power ends at the classroom door," Leia insisted. "And I think I'll exercise my right to leave now."

Anakin gave her an amused little smile. "See you next week."

"Next week," Leia said with false sweetness as she turned and moved to the door. She just may have been plotting to go out with Chuck again just to piss Anakin off. And prove a point.
