Ethics [Tuesday, January 5, 2nd period]

Anakin walked into his classroom precisely on time and gave the students assembled there an appraising glance--lingering a moment on a few faces--as the door clicked shut behind him. If you were late, you weren't getting in. "I'm Master Anakin Skywalker," he said in a voice that was intended to carry, "this is Ethics, and we're going to skip the introductions--I'll figure out who you are, if I don't recognize you already--and move straight to our first discussion."

He paced around the room, cloak flaring out behind him, as he handed out the syllabus. "Today's topic," he said, pointing to the top of the page. "Self sacrifice: knowing the difference between saving people and being a pretentious twit."

"Any time I ask a a group of people what they would do to save someone they love, they all blither on about how they would set the world on fire, lie, cheat, steal, kill, die, et cetera, et cetera. I've been at this school too long to believe that half of you haven't already been put into this situation and I'm in no mood to hear adolescent ramblings about how wonderful you were or might hypothetically be. Instead I want you to give me a concrete example of a time you admitted to yourself that a problem cannot be solved, and that sacrificing yourself wasn't a statement, but was merely pointless." His gaze swept the room. "How long does it take for you to realize you can't fix everything by yourself? Have you ever learned that lesson?"

Claire was just going to sit here wishing she could sink through the floor.

How long has Anakin practiced to get his hair like that?

Six years.

Unfortunately this is just one of the many bits of useless trivia that Layla knows.

It's a gift and a curse.

Looking over the syllabus, Griff was struck with the feeling that there was no way this course was going to go well for him.

Glancing at the syllabus, Bruce noticed that he already had responses to most of the class topics.

It occurred to him that on some level, this class may not really be for him. On the other hand, he needed to understand the psychology of criminals, and he needed a foundation for that. This class would be a perfect way to start building that foundation.

Whoa, this guy was intimidating. Dan had never seen a guy with a mullet look this intimidating.

Yeah, he'd be keeping his head down in this class for sure.

Hobbes had decided that staying in Calvin's room was boring and had insisted on following Calvin to class today.

Which was why there was a knapsack under his desk with a striped tail sticking out of it that Calvin was occasionally shushing.

Master Skywalker's tone and attitude weren't anything that Bod hadn't heard before. He'd dealt with Silas, with Miss Lupescu and with the ghosts in the graveyard who all wanted his attention to have their stories told. Bod knew (though he sometimes forgot) that paying attention was imperative.

It was easier to pay attention when his focus was held and his interest peaked. Ethics was a broad, general topic that he'd never been educated specifically in but had been able to learn about despite that.

Wow, uptight much?

Dru was just going to sit in the back of the room and keep her head down.

Leia was still not sure what to think of the whole "why aren't you dead or helping us against the Emperor instead of teaching on a planet in another galaxy" thing, but she was certain she was going to find this class...interesting.

Jacob stared at the teacher and that was definitely a new approach. Between Ghanima's class and now Skywalker, he had a feeling he shouldn't mess with his teachers too much.

Zack was entirely too wiggly to be intimidated by Anakin, really. He sat in his seat, listening to the lecture thoughtfully.

And trying for the life of him to come up with an answer that his relentless optimism hadn't trampled all over like a herd of stampeding Dual Horns. He wasn't doing so great, in that regard.

"I realized recently that I can't fix everything by myself," Claire said, her voice softer than usual. "Or, you know, at all."

[identity profile] youcantfollow.livejournal.com 2010-01-05 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
Griffin frowned, this question hit home far too recently for him to be at all comfortable talking, so he put on a persona of nonchalance, hoping to seem the opposite of how he was feeling. "Sacrifice is pointless. It gives up control to those who don't value anything real." Get enough people killed on accident and it all seemed to turn into a power struggle.

[identity profile] iknowstuff.livejournal.com 2010-01-05 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
"One day I woke up in a reality that wasn't my own," Layla said thinking hard. "Where everything seemed to be set right for everyone in question. However the reality was forced upon us against our will and I joined other people to try and change it back. It backfired and people were harmed, killed and stripped of who they were. So unfortunately I only realize I can't fix everything until it's too late."

Re: Answer the discussion question [1/5]

[identity profile] willbethenight.livejournal.com 2010-01-05 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
This was a difficult question. It had never occurred to Bruce that he couldn't solve any problem, he was devoting his life to train for something that could get him killed at any time if he wasn't perfect, and he absolutely intended to fix everything by himself.

In effect, he not only hadn't had the experiences Skywalker was asking for, he also disagreed with the very premise of the question. And so he worked around the question.

"I have yet to be in a situation where I've needed to sacrifice myself, and I haven't seen a problem that can't be solved. The real question is whether or not you can get to the best solution."

Re: Answer the discussion question [1/5]

[identity profile] imonscholarship.livejournal.com 2010-01-05 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Um, I hardly ever think I can fix anything by myself. I ask my dad for help all the time, like with school and stuff," Dan said. He hadn't ever had much bigger problems than that. "I think sometimes sacrifice makes a statement though. Little ones, I mean. Running into something huge by yourself is kind of stupid."

Said the person who risked death by taxi cab to save a drunk blonde.

"I'm the crown prince of my country," Arthur informed Anakin, "It's my duty to fix things for my people."

Arthur had been lectured many times on how being the crown prince meant he shouldn't go out and put himself at risk at a moment's notice.

Obviously, none of them had stuck. "Although of course, I must obey the king's orders at all times, so if he says no, it's out of my hands."

Liar. Ahahahaha, liar. Listen, he was starting to build a career out of barging into places even when he thought the situation was (almost) hopeless.

"Some things just can't be fixed," Effy answered, shrugging. "Either by yourself, or otherwise." One that came to mind immediately was Tony, but she kept her thoughts about that to herself. Not like she could've sacrificed herself to solve that one anyway, not without some time travel.

"I have never considered sacrificing myself. I had others to do that for me; it's one of the benefits of being a god." Illyria pointed her chin and crossed her arms. "Until I was betrayed, murdered, and dead for several thousand years; that offered a certain perspective on one's ability to solve problems without assistance."

Not that continued intervention by others had necessarily led to a condition she would refer to as 'fixed.'

Oh look, there was Leia.

"I don't think you need to worry about ruining my timeline now," she said. "I've found a lot of things out in the past few days."
