Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

The benches in this section were a little further from the bonfire than the others. If people were sensible, they might want to keep all their clothes on over here, but Fandom, of course, has never been graced with an overabundance of sensible people.

"Don't know what you're talking about, sorry," Damon said. "But, for the record, I like to watch a lot. One of my favorite things to do."

"I can smell you leeches from miles away," Jacob said. "And I'm not going to stand here and let you pick out your next snack."

Damon didn't much appreciate someone threatening to stop him from eating. "I think maybe you should back off, kid. You don't know what you're getting into."

"I know exactly what I'm getting in to," Jacob didn't know what backing off meant. There was no Bella here to stop him and he had a whole lot of rage he would just love to work off. "You wouldn't be the first leech I rip apart."

"No, kid, you really don't know what you're getting into. If you did, you would have walked away by now," Damon said, stepping closer to Jacob. He knew it would be stupid to vamp out now but even he couldn't stop the way his pupils got wider and his eyes darkened. At least his teeth seemed to be staying normal for now.

The scent got stronger and Jacob's hands were clenched more tightly, a low growl escaped his throat. If he had any sense, he'd know that without his pack, he couldn't do this on his.

There wasn't a whole lot of sense in him when he was seeing red. The stench was burning his throat and he needed to calm down. Hard to calm down with a leech so frigging close. "I don't run away from a corpse."

He needed to calm down, he couldn't morph in front of so many people.

Didi ~~sensed a disturbance in the force~~ had been keeping an eye on Jacob as he made his way through the picnic, so she noticed when the words he exchanged with the other young man went sharp.

"Jacob?" she asked warily, trying to subtly position herself as a shield. "Is this someone you know from home?"

Oh crap. Cool it, Jake.

He gnashed his teeth, his eyes still fixed on the leech. "No, just something with a foul stench."

Damon immediately cooled down when the girl came up to them and his usual calm demeanor came back quickly. He had over 160 years practice when it came to calming himself down.

"Your little friend needs to learn some manners," Damon said to Didi. "But luckily I'm in a forgiving mood."

"You're old enough to stay out of fights," Didi said, half-scolding. She didn't, precisely, know he was a vampire, but there was something ... off about him, like there was about most very old humans. If she'd concentrated, she might have gotten it. "And to forgive. Both of you are. Thank you."

She shot out a hand to grab Jacob's arm, trying to make it seem like a reassuring gesture.

Her touch was cool against his too hot skin and he jumped, but it was hard to tell as his entire body was still shaking.

"If you hurt anyone here, I'm coming after you," Jacob snapped at Damon, but he took a step back. He needed to calm down or he'd hurt Didi too. "Keep your forgiveness."

"Your warning is duly noted," Damon said, smiling again. "Have a nice day, Jacob."

"'Bye," Didi said, before turning her attention to Jacob again. If she'd known home more than an hour, he would have been swatted, as close to his head as she could reach; as it was, she had to settle for a glare and a hissed, "What on earth was that? He smells fine."

Sometimes he needed to be hit over the head for being an idiot.

Right now, it'd be a bad idea. Don't piss up the werewolf.

"He stinks like all leeches stink," Jacob said tightly, reluctantly moving away from Damon. "And he's fucking staking out a school."

Leech? Oh, that explained what was off about him. Vampires, in Didi's opinion, were cheats and annoyances more than anything else.

"He might be a vampire," she said, lowering her voice. "He's not the one making a scene on his first day. The island has police if he does anything, Jake. Let it go."

"Police doesn't deal with vampires the last time I checked," Jacob said. "And if he does anything? It'll be too late."

He wasn't good at letting things go.

"If he does anything you can tell me you told me so, and you'll be right, and I'll be furious with myself," Didi said, matter-of-factly. "But you aren't going to get anywhere assuming the worst."

She eyed him. "This is personal for you, huh?"

"Yes," he growled. He wanted to say it was their fault he was like this, but the words never even formed in his mouth and it added to his annoyance. She was freaking Death, being a werewolf was peanuts compared to that and he still simply couldn't say.

He needed to stop trembling. "You can't expect anything else from bloodsuckers."

Didi bit her lip. She knew not all vampires were alike, that some were even good; she didn't think that was what Jacob needed to hear.

"Maybe not," she said levelly. "But it's not your problem to solve by yourself. Can you just -- cool it for today?"

No, he really didn't. Chances were it'd have the opposite effect.

Her words however reminded him that he did need his pack. He never fought a vampire one on one before, despite how much he wanted to kick Edward's ass. "Yeah," he said. "I'm sorry you had to step in like that."

"It's forgotten," Didi said, waving it off. "Just do me a favor and keep your head if it comes up again, okay?"

"I can try," he said, because keeping his temper was hard sometimes. "As long as he doesn't do anything." Otherwise all bets were off.

Didi still didn't think that was quite right, but it also didn't feel like time to lecture her new little brother about getting on well with others. "As long as he doesn't start it," she said, a compromise between her ethics and what seemed the right thing to say. "Thanks."

No, that'd just lead to an entire discussion about how leeches weren't others. At least the compromise was vague enough to stretch and Jacob nodded. "I'll try not to embarrass you too much," he joked.

"I room with the dork in the kilt and I date the guy with the turtleneck over his mouth," Didi informed him. "Don't worry about it."
