Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

The benches in this section were a little further from the bonfire than the others. If people were sensible, they might want to keep all their clothes on over here, but Fandom, of course, has never been graced with an overabundance of sensible people.

"'Bye," Didi said, before turning her attention to Jacob again. If she'd known home more than an hour, he would have been swatted, as close to his head as she could reach; as it was, she had to settle for a glare and a hissed, "What on earth was that? He smells fine."

Sometimes he needed to be hit over the head for being an idiot.

Right now, it'd be a bad idea. Don't piss up the werewolf.

"He stinks like all leeches stink," Jacob said tightly, reluctantly moving away from Damon. "And he's fucking staking out a school."

Leech? Oh, that explained what was off about him. Vampires, in Didi's opinion, were cheats and annoyances more than anything else.

"He might be a vampire," she said, lowering her voice. "He's not the one making a scene on his first day. The island has police if he does anything, Jake. Let it go."

"Police doesn't deal with vampires the last time I checked," Jacob said. "And if he does anything? It'll be too late."

He wasn't good at letting things go.

"If he does anything you can tell me you told me so, and you'll be right, and I'll be furious with myself," Didi said, matter-of-factly. "But you aren't going to get anywhere assuming the worst."

She eyed him. "This is personal for you, huh?"

"Yes," he growled. He wanted to say it was their fault he was like this, but the words never even formed in his mouth and it added to his annoyance. She was freaking Death, being a werewolf was peanuts compared to that and he still simply couldn't say.

He needed to stop trembling. "You can't expect anything else from bloodsuckers."

Didi bit her lip. She knew not all vampires were alike, that some were even good; she didn't think that was what Jacob needed to hear.

"Maybe not," she said levelly. "But it's not your problem to solve by yourself. Can you just -- cool it for today?"

No, he really didn't. Chances were it'd have the opposite effect.

Her words however reminded him that he did need his pack. He never fought a vampire one on one before, despite how much he wanted to kick Edward's ass. "Yeah," he said. "I'm sorry you had to step in like that."

"It's forgotten," Didi said, waving it off. "Just do me a favor and keep your head if it comes up again, okay?"

"I can try," he said, because keeping his temper was hard sometimes. "As long as he doesn't do anything." Otherwise all bets were off.

Didi still didn't think that was quite right, but it also didn't feel like time to lecture her new little brother about getting on well with others. "As long as he doesn't start it," she said, a compromise between her ethics and what seemed the right thing to say. "Thanks."

No, that'd just lead to an entire discussion about how leeches weren't others. At least the compromise was vague enough to stretch and Jacob nodded. "I'll try not to embarrass you too much," he joked.

"I room with the dork in the kilt and I date the guy with the turtleneck over his mouth," Didi informed him. "Don't worry about it."

Jacob glanced around at them. "Did you tell the skirt guy to shave his legs?"

Didi shook her head. "No ... wait, did he?"

She hadn't looked at his legs, no.

"No, which is probably why you should," he laughed. "Less of an eye sore." And also pretty stupid, but anyway. "I think I'd rather see a girl in a skirt."

"I think most of the school would," Didi said. Jaime wasn't ugly or anything, but his legs were not sculpted works of art. "I'll bug him about that next time, if there's a next time."

"Have fun with that," Jacob said. He was more at ease again, but the line of his shoulders was still tense. They would stay that way as long as the smell kept burning the back of his throat. "He doesn't usually go around dressed like that then?"

"Nope," Didi said. "Not unless he does it when I'm out of the room, and that's a mental image I don't need."

"Right there with you," Jacob said. Not that he could fully imagine it, but he was seeing enough from right here. "Wait, is that your skirt?"

Didi took a second to decide Jacob wasn't calling her fat before answering. "No. It would be huge on me. I ordered it as a gift for him."

Nah, it was just a case of sheer stupidity. He had a lot of those moments.

"That seems kind of cruel to the rest of humanity," he reasoned.

"But funny," Didi supplied helpfully.

"Yeah, that too," he laughed. "I think I got off lightly now."

"I could make you wear my wig," Didi suggested helpfully as she pulled it out of a pocket. "Think it'd suit you?"
