DADA for Muggles, final class [Wednesday]

It had taken Remus and Sirius slightly less time this go around to program the Danger Room to do what they wanted (Sirius contended it was because it had threatened the computer with a good hexing, but that was debatable), but for a final examination, the professors felt that a bit of effort should be expended.

"Welcome to your exam," Sirius said with a slightly fiendish smile, extending his hand to encompass the scene before them: a large grassy area (complete with a different castle in the background. They missed Hogwarts a bit, so hush) covered in a variety of obstacles. "Hopefully you remember what you have learned. You will encounter a series of practical exercises in order for us to determine how prepared you are to face the Dark Arts in every day life. Good luck. If you get too hexed to continue, Professor Lupin and I will step in, but I don't think that will be entirely necessary."

"Oh yeah?" Yeah, she was right. He wouldn't do that. Not his style. "Think you've got a pretty good handle on my style, do you?"

Pretty confident she did, yeah. All that time spent around him and all.

"I'm right, aren't I?"

"...yes." Well, that honesty was just going to make her a lot more smug than she had been. "Shut up, that just means I'm not that hard to read."

Except how he kind of was.

"Don't be smug." He figured he'd say it even if he knew it was a futile request. She'd be smug.

With him mentioning it, she was just going to be giving out more. Even with everything going on between them, she was still going to enjoy getting under his skin like that.

"Aw, why not?" She had been right, he'd admitted it, it was allowed.

"Because I said don't be smug," he said, making a face. She so easily listened to him and all, after all. Of course.

"And you're making me regret that I didn't lie to you about that, make you doubt yourself about how well you know me."

"There's something wrong with liking that I do know you?" she wondered.

Because, okay, smug. But that was just a form of enjoyment from her.

"There's nothing wrong with that," he relented, shaking his head and giving her a glare that was more teasing than anything. "Do you like that you know me that well?"

"Look like, doesn't it?" Yeah, yeah, it was definitely satisfying, in its way.

At least there was a little less of the 'smug' shining through in her grin now. That made it better, didn't it?

"It goes both ways," he had to say because feeling like he was too wide open was a little scary. "I know you pretty well. So, it goes both ways."

"And you like knowing me pretty well?" Thought so, but it was worth checking. "Kind of satisfying, right?"

Wasn't about to deny that one. He did. Better than anyone else around here, undoubtedly.

"Yeah, I like it," he admitted with a quiet laugh. "Hey, first time in awhile I've wanted to know more than just surface shit about a person. It's not too bad at all."

"If you thought you'd guessed something right, you'd be fucking smug too." Effy felt confident in saying that too, and reached up to rest one hand on his shoulder. "And you'd ignore me if I told you not to be." In that way they were very similar.

"Yeah, yeah," he said, lifting one corner of his mouth into a half smile and ducking his head. "So, maybe you guessed right and you know me pretty well. That make you special?"

Yeah, it kind of did. Yeah.

Effy shrugged. "I'm going with yes. Good for my ego." Which didn't need all that much help, admittedly. Like that mattered to her.

Alex glanced around before stepping forward, close enough that he could reach an arm around her and trace something on her back, very slowly to help her figure it out.

Y-O-U. A-R-E.

He smiled as he finished the last letter, giving her back a brief stroke with his knuckles before dropping his arm.

Made it nice and easy for her to pick up that one, and Effy's lips twitched into a smile of her own in return, brushing her thumb against the side his neck briefly before she dragged her hand down to tap his chest a couple of times. A slightly less definitive way of indicating 'you too'.

This was always going to be easier when they just didn't talk.

Yeah, he agreed with that. Much easier. He picked up the general gist of what she was saying there and smiled. Alex found it a lot easier to tell her things in nonverbal ways rather than saying them out loud.

"You know, I think I'd rather pick you up than any vampire," he said and laughed. "Think I might fail this final."

More attractive prospect than a vampire. Compliment enough for her.

"Then you probably won't be the only one." Since she was planning on sticking around for a while. "Unless one decides we look snackable, anyway."

"Yeah, I hope not," he said, dropping his eyes for a brief moment and suppressing a shiver. "I've had enough of that to last a fucking lifetime. Seen enough of that shit to fill a horror movie."

Effy's fingers switched to a more soothing motion for him. "All fake, remember." Not that, that really helped, she imagined.

"Yeah, I know," he said, ducking his head and blowing out a breath. He made an effort to get all those issues back into their neat little box.

"Easier said than done," he added and laughed humorlessly. "I'm trying."

"I know." Could see those little hints of tension over the whole thing. She also knew that if Alex could avoid showing all that, he would be.

"Last bit, though. Probably getting out of here soon."

"Yeah, good." Really good. Stupid vampires. Of all things to get smacked with on his last final. "You gonna stick around till then? If it gets boring, I'll make it up to you on Saturday."

Yeah, Effy wasn't just going to leave him here on his own when she knew how much he hated this stuff, and she nodded. "I'll stay," she promised. "Sure we'll find something to keep me entertained."

It was a little easier to relax when he knew he'd have something to concentrate on that wasn't vampire related.

"Sounds like a plan," he said, sending a smile her way. He didn't thank her out loud for staying but, if she knew him, he figured she'd know since he didn't even fight her on it. "I'll take it."
