Library [12/03]

It had been almost a month since the explosion and Sam still wasn't sleeping well, so he'd headed to the library even earlier than usual today. (It was that or pretend to sleep so Illyria would have something to watch, and that still hadn't gotten less creepy.) Luckily, he'd been working in the library for so long that he could slip into autopilot when getting ready for the day, and finish everything without having to think.

"I can jump off a building. Or a dam. Or a mountain. Or a ship on fire. Or a cliff--" Anakin shook his head with a wry grin. "It was a long war. But I can't actually go up after I do that."

Sam reached over to the bookshelves and pulled one of the books out, showing Anakin the cover. "Dean and I don't look like that," he said plainly.

Anakin burst out laughing. Hard. "Not even a little bit."

Sam ended up smiling a little more in spite of himself. "I guess they're worth reading anyway, just to see what they say," he said. "Maybe."

"They might offer tips on haircare," Anakin teased. "Or ab workouts."

"Or other stuff," Sam said vaguely, thinking about Castiel's worries when they'd first met.

"What sort of other stuff?" Anakin asked, leaning casually against the counter.

Well, sort of casually. Anakin wasn't really great at relaxing.

If it was any other teacher asking, Sam might have kept his mouth shut, but Anakin was different.

"I think Sylar's still alive," Sam explained. "He killed Peter, and he's still alive and running around. It's not right."

Anakin looked thoughtful. "You can't be looking for confirmation of his existence in a book that is about different version of you who didn't know Peter, so..."

His eyes locked on Sam's. "You'd be looking for ways the other you delivered payback, right?"

"Peter wanted to stop Sylar for good," Sam said, giving Anakin a defiant look. "I think he'd want me to do it now that he can't."

No, Sam, he really wouldn't.

Oh, Anakin recognized that look. And that tone. He'd used both on Obi-Wan more than once.

"I think we both know you would have a very different approach than Peter would use," he replied. "Peter thought he could talk anyone around. I don't believe you are thinking of talking at all. And I understand that impulse, but it's not what Peter would have wanted."

"Peter's not around to say exactly what he'd want because of Sylar," Sam pointed out. "He's a murderer! All he does is hurt people! Peter's not his first victim, and he won't be the last unless someone stops him."

"Say what you really mean," Anakin replied, voice getting a little icy. "Until someone ends him. And now think of the implications of that. Have you ever killed another human being? Demons don't count."

"No, I haven't," Sam admitted. "At least, not like this. But I've killed enough evil creatures that I can't imagine killing an evil person will be much different."

"It's different," Anakin said as his brain helpfully brought forth the memory of Count Dooku's demise. "You lose a bit of yourself when you do it, especially if you go into it angry."

"I already lost a bit of myself when Peter died," Sam said, because yes, he was exactly that dramatic. "It's not like I'm doing this for fun. Sylar deserves it."

"And Sylar will get what is coming to him, but you can't go racing into it without a plan," Anakin replied. "If he's as ruthless as he sounds, he will figure out who you are, why you're there, and will start pushing buttons. You need to know his strengths and weaknesses, too."

Yes, Anakin. Let's teach the angry teenager about premeditated murder.

Sam liked that answer a lot better, and relaxed the bitchface some. "If I was going to go racing in, I'd be gone already," he said. "I know I can't take him on right now. He's too powerful. But these books are about Dean and I as adults. Maybe there's something the other me learned in all that time that I can use now."

"What do you have in mind?" Anakin asked.

"I don't know," Sam admitted. "Maybe a spell of some kind, to make me more powerful, or make Sylar weaker. Or..." He trailed off for a moment, not sure how to finish his thought in front of Anakin.

"Or...maybe something involving demon blood," Sam said, putting on his absolute most innocent look.

Anakin had a bad feeling about this. "What kind of something?" he asked.

"I don't know," Sam said honestly. "Apparently, I have demon blood in me, and that's why I have visions. But there's...someone else I've met who can control people just by talking to them," he said, not wanting to give Andy up by name, "and--I don't know, maybe there's something else I can do to hurt Sylar. I figure it can't hurt to look, right?" Riiight.
