Library [12/03]

It had been almost a month since the explosion and Sam still wasn't sleeping well, so he'd headed to the library even earlier than usual today. (It was that or pretend to sleep so Illyria would have something to watch, and that still hadn't gotten less creepy.) Luckily, he'd been working in the library for so long that he could slip into autopilot when getting ready for the day, and finish everything without having to think.

It probably wasn't healthy to keep looking for signs that Peter was alive, but that was what Sam was doing at the computer. In fact, he was so focused on Peter that he almost missed what his searching brought up instead. He'd spent enough time tracking Sylar on Peter's behalf to know the signs that he'd been somewhere, and Sam could only keep reading for so long before pushing himself away from the computer and nearly turning the whole thing off. Peter was gone and by all accounts Sylar was still out there, and knowing that hurt in a different kind of way than any other part of Peter's death had so far. If anyone coming in got glared at, hopefully they wouldn't think they'd done anything wrong themselves.

Sam had turned the computer off, and was sitting quietly at the desk, bitchfacing into thin air. It was his body's natural reaction to anger, after all.

After lunch, Sam got away from the front desk altogether, and wandered into the fiction section. The Supernatural novels were sitting there, suggesting a version of his life where things supposedly sucked more, but Sam wasn't sure whether or not reading them would help. For the moment, they were keeping him from up and leaving to go hunt down Sylar though, while he kept an ear open for anyone coming in.

La la la all done!

It was hard for Chuck to miss the bitchface when he walked into the library for lunch. He quickly racked his mind for anything evil he might've done this week and decided that, whatever the problem was, it wasn't his fault.

"...are you okay?"

Sam almost said yes, out of the habit of lying, but he ended up shaking his head instead. "No, but it's nothing you need to deal with," he said. "How are you?"

"Fine, I guess. I've been investing myself in the adventures of Castiel and the Cat. It's thrilling," he said in a deadpan tone. He held out one of the cups he was holding. "Hot chocolate with an obscene amount of whipped cream?"

Sam hadn't been hungry, but that sounded really good. "Thanks," he said, going right into avoidance mode for his own issues. "Castiel's got a cat?"

"Uh, sort of. He found it in the graveyard and now it keeps hanging around him and attacking his shoes and stuff," Chuck said. "It's actually kind of cute."

"He has a hard enough time understanding humans, and we can talk back. I imagine he's having an interesting time with an animal," Sam said.

"I think he's finding the cat easier to please than us, once I explained a few things to him about what they liked," he said. "Animals aren't nearly as ridiculous with the whole emotions thing as humans are."

Probably why Chuck liked Sweetie a lot more than most people.

"Oh yeah, those emotion things are so terrible," Sam said dryly. It would be easier if he didn't have them, of course, but he couldn't imagine that. "I'm surprised you don't have a cat of some kind. I think you could be trusted with a pet."

"I have a monkey."

Of course Chuck Bass couldn't have a normal pet. Of course. "Like, a real monkey?" Sam asked.

Chuck nodded. "Yeah, a snow monkey. He was a gift from a girl I used to screw. Dean's seen him."

"That's...seriously adorable," Sam said. "Is that why he's not here, 'cause he might ruin your fierce image?"

"Are you kidding me? Sweetie's awesome. Way cooler than half the people here," Chuck said. "I had him here for a while but he's more of a city monkey, I think."

After putting all of the droid babies back into storage, Anakin ~~jingled into~~ stopped by the library.

Not because he was concerned, really. He wanted a book. Yes! A book of some kind.

"Sam," he said, nodding his head and scowling as the bell on his hat rang jauntily.

Even with the mood he was in, Sam couldn't help but crack a small smile at the sight Anakin made. "Hi," he said. "Can I say you look festive today, or should I pretend you don't look any different than normal?"

"I'd prefer the second," Anakin said with a quick smile. "This island..."

"As opposed to an island monkey?" Sam said, laughing now. "I'm sorry you can't have him here, but it's nice of you to help Castiel. I think he can use all the help he can get sometimes."

"...hates us sometimes," Sam finished. "I won't say anything then. Can I help you find something?"

Come up with a reason to be there, Anakin.

"I was looking for ideas for Rory for Christmas," he bluffed. "She worked in the library for years when she was here, so I was hoping I'd get inspired."

"It's not like I have anything better to do," Chuck said with a shrug. "I think I can relate to him a little too much. I don't know, feels like he and I are on the same emotional level most of the time."

"Oh," Sam said, none the wiser to the bluff. "Well, books are always a good gift, at least to geeks like me and Rory. I don't know if I can give you any specific recommendations though. I don't read a lot of books I think she'd like."
