Library [11/1]

Kyle had a stiff shoulder he was being careful with as he returned books to the shelves in the morning. By afternoon, he was sitting at the front desk practising his writing with a very serious look on his face. His thoughts were elsewhere and he had to keep starting over.

The library is closed, but Kyle was here eating his lunch while he looked out the window.

Library aide privilege and also George not really caring so much about the library being closed found George slipping through the doors followed by a little dog. The dog got a glare which she promptly ignored.

"Hey Kyle," he said, wandering up to the desk. "D'ye know if th'librarian's about?"

"Haven't seen him since after I started working here. I thought maybe he got lost in there," Kyle jerked a thumb at Special Collections, "but his office looks used."

"Mayhap tis th'gremlins that are usin' th' office," George suggested thoughfully.

"If it is, they've been quiet and not biting me," he shrugged. "So I can't complain. Why do you have to see Doctor Jones?"

"I did forget t'come in yesterday," he explained. "Thought twas Friday all day. But twasn't. Obviously."

Kyle nodded in understanding. "I missed last week. He didn't say anything. You can leave a note if you want?"

"Aye, perhaps," George said, leaning on the counter to reach for some paper. "How're ye?"

He picked up his pen from where it was resting on the exercise book he'd been practising in and handed it to George. "Bored. You?"

"We should fix that," George said, looking innocent. "Gotta be somethin' t'get into."

"Oh, hiya Kyle," Hayley said, wandering into the library. "I didn't know you worked here."

"Hey Hayley," Kyle replied, leaning forward against the desk as he looked up. He gave a nod. "Every Sunday. Most Sundays," he corrected himself. "Did you need a book?"

"I was thinkin' about one, yeah," Hayley said. "But I ain't much of a reader, so I wasn't sure how to look or anything."

"I'm not either," he admitted. "But all the books have numbers on them, so it's easy to find the one you want. Do you want a story or a book about something real?"

"Real stuff," Hayley said. "If I want a story, I'll just watch TV,you know?" She grinned. "Oh, oh, how was your Halloween?"

It was easy for her to get off track.

"What's Halloween?" Someone had missed the entire thing. He led her towards the non-fiction.

"...Oh golly, you don't have that where you're from, either?" Hayley said. "No Elvis and no Halloween?"

This was unfathomable to her.

"It's not like here," Kyle shrugged. "A lot changed after Judgment Day. Everyone's priorities changed." Or so he'd been told. He was too little to remember what it was like before. "Do you know what topic you want your book to be about?"

"I guess there's not a lot of room for candy and fun after Judgment Day," Hayley said, sounding a little subdued.

"Oh, my book? I kinda want it to be about, well, big stuff. You know, philosophy."
