Hallowe'en decorations! In the library!

It was more likely than you'd think!

Jonothon was already in good spirits once again today, considering he had a date for the dance after his shift. Coming in to see the library done up in preparation for a day of the year when the freaks took the forefront was even better, still. If anyone needed him today, he was going to be wandering about, making certain that the decorations were all properly askew, and then hanging up some more fake spiderwebs. Because a spooky library wasn't complete without an absolute overdose of cobweb, after all.

He was making a list in his head, yes, of what he ought to bring in next Friday to complete the look.

"Good for you," Ben said, clapping his hands. "I'll have to look for you. Tahiri and I are going together."

//I'll be hard to miss,// Jono laughed. //I mean, unless any of th' alumni run about wrapped from nose to belt. Though I think I'll actually make an attempt to dress nicely. It can't be that difficult, can it? Have yer done this before?//

Probably not quite the same way, what with trying to look fancy while bound up in leather bandages, Jono, no.

"You'll be easy to spot unless Darth Vader makes an appearance and that would be awkward on a number of levels," Ben decided. "And I've gone to dances before, yeah. And dates. But I'm not really good at it, I don't think."

Jono would ask who in the world that Darth guy was in a moment. This other subject seemed suddenly so very much more important.

//Not good at dates? What, yer figure yer messin' up somehow?//

He didn't seem entirely convinced.

"Well, it's only been with Tahiri," Ben said, blushing to match his hair, "so it's hardly a reliable sample."

//But it's th'one that counts, isn't it?// There went Jonothon, crossing his arms over his chest. //She's yer girlfriend, right, mate?"

Ben nodded. "For almost a year now." And how had that happened?

//And has she had any complaints?// Jono plucked a plastic spider from a nearby bag and proceeded to walk it across the desk toward Ben. //Anything that really stands out at all?//

Ben stared with amusement at the spider. "None that she's really mentioned," he said.

//Well,// and at that, Jono was reaching forward to plop the spider down onto Ben's head, //what makes yer think yer no good at it, then?//

Ben reached into the Force and had the spider do a jaunty dance on his head. "Maybe she's just being nice?"

It was a very impressive jaunty dance, and Jono couldn't help but chuckle a little as he watched.

//Just bein' nice for a year, now? Yer know, yer haven't answered my question. Yer feel like yer fallin' short somehow? Any examples?//

Ben bit his lower lip and looked appraisingly at Jono. "Things with Tahiri are...complicated," he said finally. "She's from my galaxy, but from a different time. In her version, I'm a toddler."

//Yer know, that's hardly yer fault,// Jono replied, stubbornly. And pointedly. //She's not dating th'toddler, she's datin' you, mate.//

"And in my galaxy, she got a little--" evil, "confused," Ben continued.

And now Jono was starting to twig onto the notion that perhaps things were a tad more complicated than Ben was letting on, yes.

//Yer not necessarily datin' th'same Tahiri, either,// he offered. Because that might make all the difference in the world too, right?

Ben nodded. "And sometimes my brain gets a little...confused about that," he said.

Ooooh.

//Yer thinkin' too much about the maybes, and not lettin' what is be what is, then?//

"Something like that," Ben replied. Because 'and old, slutty, evil Tahiri kind of felt me up' was sooooo not something he was sharing in a library.

Good call, Ben! That was probably not adequate library conversation.

//Yer know it isn't unheard of for things to go differently,// Jono pointed out. //Like the different versions of yer dranddad, and th'like. Maybe it's just that Tahiri.//

"This Tahiri won't turn into that Tahiri," Ben said vehemently, "but sometimes instincts make things unnecessarily awkward."

//That, I can understand.// Jono winced a little, sympathetically. //It's difficult to get close, is it?//

Ben nodded, his entire face going bright red.

//Trust me, mate, if yer going to blush like that, yer've already made it a hell of a lot farther than I've been able to go in months.//

Not helpful, Jono.
