Hallowe'en decorations! In the library!

It was more likely than you'd think!

Jonothon was already in good spirits once again today, considering he had a date for the dance after his shift. Coming in to see the library done up in preparation for a day of the year when the freaks took the forefront was even better, still. If anyone needed him today, he was going to be wandering about, making certain that the decorations were all properly askew, and then hanging up some more fake spiderwebs. Because a spooky library wasn't complete without an absolute overdose of cobweb, after all.

He was making a list in his head, yes, of what he ought to bring in next Friday to complete the look.

"I'm sorry," Ben said, voice full of sympathy. "How long had you known each other?"

//Since we were kids,// Jono sighed. //Grew up together, in London. Either way, the point is somewhat moot, now. I can't face her again, and I doubt she'd want to see me.//

[And now I flee for work! SP is delicious like pie?]

Ben nodded. "That sucks."

[SP is faaaaaaabulous!]

//That's one word for it, yes,// Jono replied, nodding slightly. //Yer haven't gone and blown up Tahiri yet, though, so I think yer on a fairly good track, mate. Do what yer comfortable with, and th'rest will come when it comes.//

And since Jono had been upfront with Ben, Ben decided to return the favor, at least a little way. "The other Tahiri tried to kill me twice," he said. "She just didn't really mean it."

Jono nodded slightly, thinking on that for a moment before replying.

//It's just a face, Ben. A face and a name. The rest isn't th'same. And if it's the future of this Tahiri that yer worried about... It's the future. What will be, and all that.//

"And a feeling in the Force," Ben said, "which is where I get messed up."

//And no amount of logic or reason will do away with something that terrifies the naffin' hell out of yer,// Jono replied.

Yeah, he could appreciate that, himself. //Don't push yerself, if yer can't do it right away, Ben. If yer aren't ready, no amount of pretending yer are is going to change that.//

"I just feel guilty about it," Ben said, shuffling his boots on the floor. "Because I should know better."

//And I should know better than to panic when some chippy tries t'kiss me,// Jonothon pointed out. //But that's still what it is, mate. Panic. Irrational, gripping, dangerous bloody panic. Knowin' better doesn't do a lick of good in th'face of it.//

"I'm a Jedi," Ben said. "We're better than panic."

//Yer human, Ben.// Jono said, carefully. //Nobody is better than panic. Yer can train until yer have a complete grasp on yer actions on the outside, but that isn't going to ever stop fear, mate. We have fear for a reason.//

"To overcome," Ben said, nodding. "Or ignore until later, if you're my dad."

Jono's eyebrow twitched upward a little.

//Ignorin' it until later seems like a good enough way to go about it. Heaven knows, I could stand to learn that one, myself.//

Or how to overcome it, sure. But that one seemed less likely.

"My dad's totally astral," Ben said with a wide smile.

//Deal with the situation, explode later,// Jono replied. //Does he offer lessons?//

Hey, it was totally worth asking.

"Yes," Ben said, nodding. "He's been teaching longer than I've been alive."

//And he's also nowhere near here,// Jono added, after a moment of thought. //Such is life, I suppose.//

"Well, a different one will be here for the dance, probably," Ben said, shaking his head and laughing. "This place."

//Bloody madness, isn't it?// Jono was chuckling a little at that, as well. //And yet, we're still here. I don't know that I could bring myself to leave, really. Not until I have to. It seems to have a funny way of growin' on a person.//

It helped that Jono hadn't blown anyone up yet, here.

Ben nodded. "I agree. A year ago I would have thought you were insane for telling me I'd actually enjoy spending time with my grandfather, and yet..."

//And yet,// Jono agreed, nodding slightly himself. //I think that's the thing about this island, isn't it? It offers up the impossible. Family that yer might not have known, before. People who don't care what yer are. I haven't been here for a full semester, yet, and I'm already dreading th'day I have to graduate and leave.//

Because going back to his own version of the world, where he was hated and feared simply because he was a mutant, was absolutely not his idea of a good time.

"Yes," Ben said. "You can leave most of the baggage behind when you get here and only tell people what you want them to know."

//Most people here have no idea what I'm hiding. Back home, I practically wear it like a signpost for th'world to see. So, yes, mate. That. That exactly. It's a clean slate. It's what yer make of it.//

Which was why Ben had no idea why half of the people he met felt compelled to tell him everything about their entire lives when they'd just met. "And I use it to not freak people out unnecessarily," he said with a smile.
