DADA for Muggles [Wednesday, September 30, 5th period]

The students had been handwavily invited to the Danger Shop today, where an hour prior Remus and Sirius had struggled with the programming and a fair number of expletives had been irritably shouted.

At the moment, though, it appeared as a dank, dark room that had clearly once been the toast of someone's rather ostentatious home. The furniture and trappings had clearly been unattended for several decades, however.

"Hello, everyone!" Remus said cheerfully, because this was the sort of day where excess cheer would come in handy. "Defending oneself against dark creatures and evil people isn't always going to be enough. Occasionally, you'll run across cursed objects themselves, which will look perfectly harmless. In Muggle films, these are often depicted as a relic, or a book, the opening or touching of which will invoke some sort of thousand year-old curse. These aren't just stories, at least in our world. At home, we have an entire section of our government devoted to bewitched and misused objects."

"And sometimes they're beloved family heirlooms," Sirius added sourly, glancing around the room. "In this room, there are several cursed objects. What you are looking for are found on the sheets of parchment that Merlin and Griff assuming they are here are passing out to you now. Please search for and identify as many as you can before the class is over without enchanting or poisoning yourself or your classmates."

He pointed to a basket of dragonhide gloves. "The gloves aren't optional today."

"As always, we're both available to help and answer questions," Remus added helpfully. "Don't touch anything with your bare hands, please, and if you run into trouble, do let us know."

Dinah pointed at the tweezery thing on the list. "That one, maybe?" She sniffed the air, and said, "So. That's what old crazy money smells like."

"Old, like, super crazy money." Priestly shook his head. "D'ya think you can get rid of cursed objects by burning them? I can totally do burning. Set the whole place on fire, then you don't have to touch anything."

"Honestly, yeah. I mean, burn it, splash it with holy water, maybe put a big, concrete slab over the ashes in case they want to dance, or something." Dinah made little dancing motions with her fingers, then shivered. "But, I guess the insurance people would get peeved."

"Yeah, they probably refuse to cover damage caused by cursed objects." Priestly's hands remained firmly in his pockets. "How are gloves supposed to protect us from the clock shooting things at us?"

"Um." Dinah stared at the list. "If I were a ninja, I could catch them, but. We haven't gotten that far in my training yet. Any of my training. There should be kevlar for that one."

"Oooooo!" Dinah gave Priestly a gleeful look. "You're brilliant!" She tilted her head. "At the least, I can knock 'em away? So if we find it, we can ... I dunno, get close enough to turn it around or put it on its face or something?"

"Maybe sneak up next to it, or something." Priestly was still pretty into his "stand there and look from a neutral spot" idea, but he was pretty sure Dinah wouldn't let him do that.

She was kinda scary-brave, sometimes.

Recklessly optimistic could be scary-brave, yes.

"Right!" She looked around for clocks, spotting a cuckoo clock on the wall, a carriage clock on the mantelpiece, and frowned. "Hmm. Hallway?"

"Hallway," Priestly acknowledged. "You, uh, want me to lead the way?"

"Sure!" Wait. Well... "You'll duck real fast, right? Just in case? Here, maybe you should have a pillow to shield you. We don't know how fast these are."

There weren't any pillows on the cursed item list, right? "I can totally dodge." Okay, so he was more used to dodging huge people than magically thrown bolts. Still.

"Then, hallway!" Dinah bowed to Priestly so he could lead the way, peering around the corner and getting read to blast a bolt with TK for great justice.

Priestly lead the way cautiously around the corner, pillow held out in front of him. He made it about two feet in when something started flying at him from the other wall. He let out a faint "ack!" noise and dropped, holding the pillow defensively in front of him as the bolts went whizzing past.

Dinah slammed her TK at two of them, sending them zooming into the ceiling-- ack, plaster-- and then grabbed another one before it could get closer to Priestly's leg. "Move! Roll! Thataway!" Ack! And then knock another one into the floor, still vibrating in front of him.

The quivering bolt got an "eep!" from Priestly, as he attempted to figure out which way was "thataway!", then just kinda picked a direction and rolled.

The clock kept firing as he rolled away, then stopped when he was about twenty feet away from it. Dinah gave it a mistrustful look. "It's a Clock of Evil. Are you okay?"

Priestly peeked up over the edge of the pillow.

"Um." He took stock. "Yeah, I'm fine. So now we sneak up on it?"

"I think so." Dinah poked at it with her TK, then leaned a little closer to look at it, dodging a bolt, then frowned. "It looks really heavy, and kind of delicate. I don't think I could lift it with telekinesis myself without smashing it. Think you can sneak up on it from that side, and I'll sneak up from this side?"

Priestly shook his head. "It might be able to shoot sideways. I'll distract it, and you sneak up?"

"You're sure?" Dinah said, looking worried. "I can try it, anyway..." Maybe she could get it aimed toward the wall at least. Scoot it around?

Priestly held up the pillow. "I excel at being a distraction," he reminded her. "Plus, you're less likely to have to actually touch it physically."

"Point. Don't get hurt, though. Even if this is Danger Shop stuff," Dinah cautioned him, and started to get closer, then frown, concentrating on the clock, ready to duck if it shot at her, and reached out with her TK, closing it around it.

"I'll be fine," Priestly groused. He raised the pillow again and started creeping towards the clock. "Hey . . . time face!" Wow, that was lame. "Yeah, you wanna piece of this?!"
