cafeteria | lunch time | tuesday | 29 september

After his success with toast last week, Jonas had spent his free time trying his toaster out with a few other things. He'd found that bread worked well but crackers did not. That had been a gigantic mess and Jonas had felt sheepish enough to not touch the toaster for a few days.

But, he'd gotten over that and tried bread again, this time adding peanut butter once the bread had been toaster and packing it for a lunch. So, that's where he was now, prodding experimentally at the sandwich and wondering if he should eat the apple first. The apple was green, something he hadn't seen before but he'd been assured it was ripe.

Food examination and consumption was a lengthy process for Jonas but he enjoyed it. Food was a small but integral part of his memory that he was building.

[cafeteria's open, yep]

"Thank you," she said as she accepted the sandwich. The charm she wore against her skin didn't heat up, so at least the sandwich wasn't magicked. Not that she'd been worried.

She tore a corner off the sandwich and couldn't resist sniffing it. "You've been trying the food here?" she asked.

"I've not heard of crackers either," she mused. "Jonothon did tell me about toast. What'd bad about crackers?"

She finally popped the piece of sandwich in her mouth and her eyes widened as it didn't like she'd expected it to. Not that she knew what she'd been expecting. "Strange."

"Tis," she agreed, blinking and she took another small bite hoping the bread would help get it to unstick. "It isn't bad." She was still trying to decide.

"It didn't break the toaster?"

She chuckled. "At least you know it now," she reasoned. "Did you like the toasted bread?"

Beka nodded, glad to hear one thing she knew. She'd made her piece with the peanut butter, even if some was still sticking to her teeth. "I have, we've got all kinds of flavors."

"It sounds good," she agreed. "And I think the sandwich was good too. If not very strange. Jonothon showed me how to use the fryer and we made apple fritters. Mayhap if I manage to make them right, I can let you taste them."

"I told you about them a while ago," she reminded him, not minding that he'd forgotten. He'd enough to get used to, so had she. "They're slices of apple wrapped in batter that you put in oil. They're delicious."

She shook her head in amusement at his response. "Yes, telling you about them made me want to eat some. Jonothon showed me how things work in the kitchen, so we tried making them. I left them in the oil too long, though."

"Bit burned on the outside, but they were still edible," she said. "Not as good as the ones they sell on Evening market. I'm not that used to cooking much."

"Same," she said lightly. She wasn't confident enough to try to explain anything. "I used to help Mama when I was younger, before Lord Gershom took us into his household. There's a cook there and her staff, and as a Dog I've not got time to spent preparing aught."

She smiled at him. "You sound like you enjoy it."

"Don't put metal or plastic in the microwave," she advised. "Tis all I know to avoid fires."

"If it counts as using when someone's standing beside you telling you what buttons to push," she admitted sheepishly. She'd yet to put the information to use.
