cafeteria | lunch time | tuesday | 29 september

After his success with toast last week, Jonas had spent his free time trying his toaster out with a few other things. He'd found that bread worked well but crackers did not. That had been a gigantic mess and Jonas had felt sheepish enough to not touch the toaster for a few days.

But, he'd gotten over that and tried bread again, this time adding peanut butter once the bread had been toaster and packing it for a lunch. So, that's where he was now, prodding experimentally at the sandwich and wondering if he should eat the apple first. The apple was green, something he hadn't seen before but he'd been assured it was ripe.

Food examination and consumption was a lengthy process for Jonas but he enjoyed it. Food was a small but integral part of his memory that he was building.

[cafeteria's open, yep]

"Same," she said lightly. She wasn't confident enough to try to explain anything. "I used to help Mama when I was younger, before Lord Gershom took us into his household. There's a cook there and her staff, and as a Dog I've not got time to spent preparing aught."

She smiled at him. "You sound like you enjoy it."

"Don't put metal or plastic in the microwave," she advised. "Tis all I know to avoid fires."

"If it counts as using when someone's standing beside you telling you what buttons to push," she admitted sheepishly. She'd yet to put the information to use.

"It heats things up," Beka said. "Jonothon used it to thaw sommat frozen and it can heat up your drinks. There's meals that can be heated up in it too."

"Yes," she said slowly. "I think it's easier to use." She wasn't certain. Mayhap she should have asked Jonothon that part.

She grinned as she leaned back in her chair, considering him. "You do seem content with your toasting Gift."

She bit her lip, suppressing the bubble of laughter and the haughty posture disappeared as she leaned forward once more. "We'd not want that. I don't know if this place has skilled Healers."

"You'd want to put cold water on it, cool the wound down," she said. "Tis all I know. There's magical ointments if you can't see a Healer, but I don't know if they have them here." Mayhap she needed to ask Emma what they were supposed to do in case someone got injured.

"That's lucky," she mused. "Healers cost a lot of coin and there's always sommat that goes wrong in the Lower City. The Dogs have good mages to fix us up if sommat happens on duty, but most aren't as lucky."

She nodded. "It can do a lot of things. Healers are important. They make a Dog's life easier." At least at first. When you were young and you'd not had been healed so much that your body grew immune to the magic.
