Fandom vs. The Real World- 2nd Period- Class #5

"Well," Aeryn said when everyone was in their seats, "I wish I had the foresight to be able to have prepared you adequately for what happened last week. I'm sure if you weren't a female who turned into a male, you knew someone who did, or at least heard about it, so I want to take a moment to check in and see what it was like for everyone." And she might have been hoping Karla made it through okay, shhh.

Once the discussion was over, she continued, "This weekend is Parents Weekend. You may or may not have someone coming, but I'll have you know that I never had anyone show up for me, and yet I still ended up dealing with other people's friends and family. And there will always be someone who doesn't want certain things to make it back to those from home. Unfortunately there are no classes to ease them into it. Some of you might be fine telling your family everything that's going on here, and that is a good thing. Others might not have that luxury, and it takes some talking around things sometimes. I don't suggest outright lying. If you get caught, it's going to be bad. But there are ways to stretch the truth. Each of you is going to choose a topic, and pair up in order to try and explain it to the other person in a way that would not make anyone panic. Consider it practice."

Chuck... wasn't sure he wanted to have to explain any of these things to his dad. He was paranoid enough without knowing anything.

So, this weekend was going to be a picnic, wasn't it. Maybe he could avoid it all? He could hope!

"You are anxious about this weekend," Raven said to Chuck. Empaths. Masters of the obvious. She was not nervous herself because she was not expecting any visitors.

[identity profile] knowsnokungfu.livejournal.com 2009-09-29 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Chuck, sort of lost in his own world, turned his head towards her a little more sharply than he'd intended. Raven being a very pretty girl was not going to help his nervy and awkward feeling any.

"I'm just... not sure how my dad's going to take it." Which was vague, but really, even normal parents would find this place tough to swallow.

Raven, however, was in a fairly good mood because a crappy week had ended with kisses on the roof. "I understand," she said. "This place is difficult to become accustomed to for most students, and trying to explain it to family who have no experience with such strangeness would be even harder. Do you wish to work on the assignment together? Perhaps that will help ease your mind."

"I-- I'm not sure it will," he admitted, obviously thinking about that just a moment longer.

"But sure, I'd like to work with you!" Just so that was clear. "Hi. I'm Chuck."

"I am Raven, though I am also called Rachel," Raven said. "It is nice to meet you, Chuck. Are you from the world just outside Fandom?"

Re: Activity

[identity profile] knowsnokungfu.livejournal.com 2009-09-29 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"Um, just outside and about ten years back," Chuck answered. "I think."

"So... sort of?" Yeah. "Alternate universes are a bit... blurry, like that."

"It's nice to meet you too!" That possibly should've been the first thing he said, but, at least it got in there eventually.

Raven nodded. "So your world has no magic, at least none that is common," she said. "And you think your father will not take it well if he sees some of the more unusual things Fandom has to offer?"

While Beka wasn't certain if anyone would visit her, there was the previous discussion she still hadn't managed to put in her reports.

Karla nodded to the female she didn't know, flashing her a friendly smile. "Hi, I'm Karla. Care to do the assignment together?"

Re: Activity

[identity profile] provostsdog.livejournal.com 2009-09-29 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Beka nodded. "Tis why we're here," she said easily. "Is someone coming to visit you?"

Karla grinned and nodded. "My best friend, her father, and my cousin," she said. "Fortunately, there isn't anything I'll have to hide from them. There's a lot they'll probably find weird or confusing--" like the fact that the majority of the people here were landens "--but nothing that they won't accept."

She tilted her head. "You?"

[identity profile] provostsdog.livejournal.com 2009-09-29 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"I've not heard aught yet," she shrugged a shoulder. "If someone would come, I think it'd be my Lord Gershom." She doubted it, the Lord Provost had other things to do. "He wants to know everything, I'm just not certain how to put it all."

"Will you be able to tell him?" Karla asked with a grin. "Or should we practice these so you know how to explain to him that your roommate's turned into a bird?"

Re: Activity

[identity profile] provostsdog.livejournal.com 2009-09-29 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"She's not. I hope," she paused, wondering if she'd seen a strange bird when she'd been feeding her pigeons. "That'd be strange introductions to make."

She shook her head. "I'm Beka, by the way. Sorry, I'd not mean to ignore your question." The player was just being a flake.

Totally fine!"

"Nice to meet you, Beka," Karla said, momentarily distracted. She knew that name somehow. Right! "Hey--you're Emma's Younger Sib, aren't you? New this term? I heard on the radio that she took you shopping." Karla laughed. "She did the same thing for me when I arrived."

Mat, who was still wearing his only other pair of boots thanks to the stupid blue elf things who stole his good pair, was ready to spin all of the discussion topics.

...not that anyone was going to visit him.

Re: Activity

[identity profile] yakkoyaks.livejournal.com 2009-09-30 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yakko rushed up to Mat and said, "Hi. My roommate fell into a locker and hasn't been seen since. Here, have a balloon!"

Yakko pulled a balloon from behind his back and presented it to Mat. He was trying to fend off panic with colorful bribery.

Re: Activity

[identity profile] bloody-luck.livejournal.com 2009-09-30 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
"Thank you!" Mat said politely, blinking rapidly. "I'm sorry to hear that about your roommate."

Re: Activity

[identity profile] yakkoyaks.livejournal.com 2009-09-30 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, it's okay. Now I have more room for my balloons," Yakko said, producing a yellow one.

Re: Activity

[identity profile] bloody-luck.livejournal.com 2009-09-30 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
"They didn't happen to turn into balloons, did they?" Mat checked.

Re: Activity

[identity profile] yakkoyaks.livejournal.com 2009-09-30 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
"Not unless the locker turns you into a bag of uninflated balloons I bought at the store for a buck," Yakko mused.

Re: Activity

[identity profile] bloody-luck.livejournal.com 2009-09-30 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
"You'd have to admit that we could fit a lot more students into the dorm rooms if you could turn them into a bag of balloons."

Mat, stop talking.

Re: Activity

[identity profile] yakkoyaks.livejournal.com 2009-09-30 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, but then people would blow all the balloons up and I'd wear out my welcome with my 'Good night everybody' catchphrase," Yakko mused.
