Fandom vs. The Real World- 2nd Period- Class #5

"Well," Aeryn said when everyone was in their seats, "I wish I had the foresight to be able to have prepared you adequately for what happened last week. I'm sure if you weren't a female who turned into a male, you knew someone who did, or at least heard about it, so I want to take a moment to check in and see what it was like for everyone." And she might have been hoping Karla made it through okay, shhh.

Once the discussion was over, she continued, "This weekend is Parents Weekend. You may or may not have someone coming, but I'll have you know that I never had anyone show up for me, and yet I still ended up dealing with other people's friends and family. And there will always be someone who doesn't want certain things to make it back to those from home. Unfortunately there are no classes to ease them into it. Some of you might be fine telling your family everything that's going on here, and that is a good thing. Others might not have that luxury, and it takes some talking around things sometimes. I don't suggest outright lying. If you get caught, it's going to be bad. But there are ways to stretch the truth. Each of you is going to choose a topic, and pair up in order to try and explain it to the other person in a way that would not make anyone panic. Consider it practice."

Beka nodded. "Tis why we're here," she said easily. "Is someone coming to visit you?"

Karla grinned and nodded. "My best friend, her father, and my cousin," she said. "Fortunately, there isn't anything I'll have to hide from them. There's a lot they'll probably find weird or confusing--" like the fact that the majority of the people here were landens "--but nothing that they won't accept."

She tilted her head. "You?"

"I've not heard aught yet," she shrugged a shoulder. "If someone would come, I think it'd be my Lord Gershom." She doubted it, the Lord Provost had other things to do. "He wants to know everything, I'm just not certain how to put it all."

"Will you be able to tell him?" Karla asked with a grin. "Or should we practice these so you know how to explain to him that your roommate's turned into a bird?"

"She's not. I hope," she paused, wondering if she'd seen a strange bird when she'd been feeding her pigeons. "That'd be strange introductions to make."

She shook her head. "I'm Beka, by the way. Sorry, I'd not mean to ignore your question." The player was just being a flake.

Totally fine!"

"Nice to meet you, Beka," Karla said, momentarily distracted. She knew that name somehow. Right! "Hey--you're Emma's Younger Sib, aren't you? New this term? I heard on the radio that she took you shopping." Karla laughed. "She did the same thing for me when I arrived."

"I am," Beka remembered now too. It was obvious that Beka had been shopping with Emma since she was out of her tunics now. "I think she mentioned you before." She paused, for an instant having too much to process. "Radio's the thing that plays music?"

"It plays music?" Karla asked, surprised. "I only know that it reports on what everyone was up to during the day. I never bothered seeing what else it did."

Huh. Something for her to check when she got back to her room.

"In case you couldn't tell," Karla added wryly, "I'm new to this place and time, too. Emma took me shopping so I'd have something to wear other than Morton's castoffs."

That wasn't quite true. Saetan had sent a lot of lovely dresses and things. She just preferred not to wear them.

Beka nodded slowly, she'd be more appreciative of the personal information once she got her mind past one thing. "It reports what everyone does?"

"Emma didn't warn you?" Karla asked, then winced. She could have put that a little more diplomatically. "I mean, yes. You know all the squirrels that run around the campus? They take notes on what everyone is doing, then brings them back for someone to read at night."

Karla gave Beka her best unsure-but-game smile. "I know it sounds weird, but it's the truth. You can offer the squirrels rum to make them go away, though."

"Why'd anyone care what we're up to?" she asked, looking thoroughly confused. It made no sense and the squirrels involvement made it hard to believe.

"They're nosy?" Karla suggested. "I don't think they have a reason, actually. Wait, here, I can show you."

She called in her laptop, set it up on the desk, and went to the podcast website. It was one of the three sites she knew on the internet. "This was last night's broadcast," she explained, making sure the volume was as low as it could be while remaining audible.

Beka listening, wide eyed and gawking at the laptop. The coves were talking about the class she'd taken yesterday and she was grateful they'd not said anything specific. "And you listen every evening to the radio on this television?"

"Well, this is a laptop, not a teevee," Karla noted, though she couldn't explain a difference beyond 'this one has a keyboard.' "But, pretty much, yeah. I like knowing who is saying what about me. The squirrels aren't the most diligent with their reports and that is further edited by the whims of the speaker."

Just wait until Beka heard one of Deadpool's radios.

"You've found your way about this world's technology," Beka observed. The buttons on the remote were a lot, but the laptop looked even more confusing. "And it said when Emma took me out to buy clothes?"

Karla laughed a bit at that. "Hardly," she said, shaking her head at her laptop. "I know how to turn it on and make it do a few things, but that's all. And only because my friends were kind enough to show me how to do so, several times and in painstaking detail."

She pointed to the power button and pulled up the start menu to show Beka how the feat of powering the machine on and off was accomplished. "See all these options here?" she asked, hovering the cursor over the All Programs folder. "I have no idea what they do or why they're there. All I know is that squirrels are nosy, I can listen to their reports on my laptop, and, yes, it did mention you shopping with Emma."
