Kyle was at his usual position at the desk attempting to work through a Hooked on Phonics book. Whenever he needed a break, he wandered over to the window and tried to figure out what to put in his recorded letter home this week.

"I can't come just for your company?" Jack couldn't even pretend to look hurt, really.

"Though ... I could use a recommendation for a <a href="http://cuff-me-once.livejournal.com/4222.html>fantasy</a> book for Classic Genre. Here's my reading list -- do you know anything from it?"

Kyle glanced at the list, though he couldn't understand more than a word or two of it, but he already had an answer. He shrugged. "I'm not really the kind of guy to ask for recommendations for books. I think the guy who's in tomorrow is from around now. He might have a better idea of what's good to read. Or if you need it now, I can show you where the fantasy section is so you can check out the back of the books."

"I'm here now; you may as well show me," came the reply. "Lead on?"

Kyle headed straight for the numbered section he knew to be the books with the dragons, knights and magic that were made up. "It's all of these shelves all the way down to here," he said, pointing out where the numbers changed to a different section. "Should be all of the fantasy we've got."

"It's a lot," Jack said, eyes raking over the shelves in search of something that didn't look overwhelmingly stupid. "Thank you."

"So, do you enjoy your job here?"

He shrugged and nodded. "It's something to do. I pretty much just guard the place to make sure no one takes off with the books without running them through the scanner to keep a record."

"Funny," Jack said, offhandedly. "You'd find a job in one of the few places where money isn't used."

He pulled a Barry Plodder book off the shelf to look at the cover.

"I deal with money at Turtle & Canary, but most of the time Apu does it. I make sure everything is where it's supposed to be."

Jack nodded slowly. "Is it making sense to you, though?"

"I haven't taken anything I didn't pay for if that's what you mean," he said not unkindly. "I got that much." He didn't see the sense in it, but he accepted it.

"I didn't think you would steal," Jack said, also not unkindly. "Just ... checking in."

He flipped the Barry Plodder book open at random and let his eyes drift over the text. "Well, this book isn't bad." Silly, but all of the fantasy books seemed to be.

"I didn't know a lot about how stuff worked when we first met. It's sensible to check in and make sure I haven't messed up too bad. That's what big brothers do." He glanced at the book. "That's a big book."

"It's long, but it's written simply. I think it may be for children -- it's about them, anyhow," Jack shrugged. "I know you didn't know much, Kyle. But you wanted to learn; that makes a difference."

"I've had some good people to help me out. It's made a big difference."

"This is a good place," Jack decided. "I'm glad for you, and I think I'll take this book."

"One book coming right up." He held out his hand for it. "I'll put it through the scanner."
