Library - Sunday [09/27]

Kyle was at his usual position at the desk attempting to work through a Hooked on Phonics book. Whenever he needed a break, he wandered over to the window and tried to figure out what to put in his recorded letter home this week.

He shrugged and nodded. "It's something to do. I pretty much just guard the place to make sure no one takes off with the books without running them through the scanner to keep a record."

"Funny," Jack said, offhandedly. "You'd find a job in one of the few places where money isn't used."

He pulled a Barry Plodder book off the shelf to look at the cover.

"I deal with money at Turtle & Canary, but most of the time Apu does it. I make sure everything is where it's supposed to be."

"I haven't taken anything I didn't pay for if that's what you mean," he said not unkindly. "I got that much." He didn't see the sense in it, but he accepted it.

"I didn't think you would steal," Jack said, also not unkindly. "Just ... checking in."

He flipped the Barry Plodder book open at random and let his eyes drift over the text. "Well, this book isn't bad." Silly, but all of the fantasy books seemed to be.

"I didn't know a lot about how stuff worked when we first met. It's sensible to check in and make sure I haven't messed up too bad. That's what big brothers do." He glanced at the book. "That's a big book."

"It's long, but it's written simply. I think it may be for children -- it's about them, anyhow," Jack shrugged. "I know you didn't know much, Kyle. But you wanted to learn; that makes a difference."
