Applied Science | Monday | Period 2

As the students came in today, they'd find that each desk held a pile of different kinds of paper, plus some blueprints. Tyler still wasn't feeling his best, so he'd decided the way to fill the hour was to let students make projectiles.

... anything for science, man.

"Welcome," he said, once they all seemed to be in their seats. "Today, we're talking about basic aerodynamics -- paper planes. The aerodynamics behind a paper plane are about the same as those behind any glider. Let me explain." And he did, discussing the reasons paper planes flew or didn't fly, the relative importance of the tail (none), and the differences in performance between origami planes and scale models.

As he spoke, he folded a perfect glider, and marked the conclusion of his lecture by tossing it over the heads of the students to crash just past the last row of desks. (Yes. He'd worked on this a lot.) "Your job today," he said, "is to build a perfect paper plane, either using the designs I gave you or with a design of your own. Cutting, glue, and tape are fine to use; so are small weights like paper clips or bobby pins. No using telekinesis to make it fly, though if I could, I would too."

He waved a hand at them. "Go to it."

... This was officially Jonothon's favourite class. He'd been pretty certain about that last week when he got to demolish a box that might or might not have had a cat in it, but the paper airplanes just absolutely set that decision in stone.

He was there if anybody just so happened to need him for whatever reason, of course, picking places on the wall and trying to crash his planes into them from the other side of the room.
furnaceface: (Very disappointed in you)

There was a special art to folding these things, really. Jono's eyebrow furrowed in concentration as he focused on folding the greatest paper airplane the world had ever known.

... Which was to say, he was folding the most simple pattern he could find, and then he was going to rely on a half-decent throwing arm to get any distance out of this thing at all. Simple was good.

Alrighty then.

Ino idly considered the supplies and wondered if he'd mind if she attempted other sorts of projectiles with them. She could probably figure out how to make an origami kunai if she really put her mind to it.

Still contemplating kunai--would a kunai made out of paper, even if it flew, even work if she put chakra into it?--Ino tugged out a sheet of paper and started folding a plane.

What?

It gave her the appearance of doing the assignment while she mused on adaptations of it. And it entertained her, since this was so something kids used to do in the Academy and Iruka-sensei had always blown his top.

Permission was a bit weird, huh.

If the sheer number of detentions they'd gotten him over the years was any indication, if there was one thing that Calvin knew, it was paper planes.

Which was why he started folding automatically as he looked around for likely targets.

After only a few minutes, Calvin had several squadrons of paper planes.

Until someone needed him he was going to be throwing them at various targets around the room.

Jennifer hadn't yet made Jono's acquaintance, really, but she'd seen him in class.

"Want to put our heads together on this?"
furnaceface: (Wtf?)

Jono tilted his head slightly, and then gave his shoulders a shrug.

//Can't do any harm, can it?//

And then he waited to make certain that his partner wasn't going to freak out over his talking in people's heads. It was a thing.

Liir considered this.

And then got down to starting to design what he thought might work.

She was more sort of surprised.

... Surprised, he could live with. Jono shrugged a little bit.

//It's just... what I do. Mutant thing, if that means anything at all.//

Around here, more often than not, it really seemed to be just another word.
