Detention, Saturday

"Hey," Mitchell called, once the ~~handwavey~~ detention announcement had gone out and everyone had had time to gather up by the Danger Shop. "I'm Mitchell. Some of you might've met me." He grinned. "You're here because for whatever reason, the school has chosen to recognise your trespasses. That doesn't mean it has to be horrible, just unpleasant."

Another slight grin, with only a hint of apology.

"So today, we're going to be preparing for a tea party," he continued, "Although I'd like it if you'd all go light on the tea. I'm more of a coffee person."

He shouldn't be allowed free range of children.

"Just enter through there and get your finest," he said, waving at the doorway, "And I'll see you on the other end."

"It takes a lot to stand out here," Kate replied. "Being a talking frog who's made of felt has that effect even more than the talking into people's heads thing. He seems to be pretty weird by everyone's standards."

She laughed. "And I already tend to listen pretty carefully to whatever Layla Miller says."

//I've seen weirder,// Jono decided, and then shrugged and decided it was a good idea to move on to the next point of conversation before he start elaborating.

Nobody wanted Jono to elaborate. Really.

//And it's a good idea to take that gel at her word. She knows stuff.//

Kate chuckled. "Apparently. They should hire her for the radio permanently. We'd always be a step ahead."

//Ah, but then the squirrels would be out of work, wouldn't they?// Jono gave his head a bemused shake. //And that's just what this island needs. A bunch of unemployed alcoholic rodents hanging about.//

Kate made a face. "Oh, right. I didn't think of that. Yeah, bad idea. The squirrels are enough trouble as it is. Although I guess they could be hired to do other stuff, I just can't think of anything right now."

//Anything that involves drinking, I suppose. Taste-testing or something of the like for new drinks at the bar.//

Jono hadn't been to Caritas, yet. There wasn't much of a point.

"The bar has zombies. I think the squirrels should stay out of that mess," Kate pointed out. "But maybe they could come to the school to demonstrate why it's important to moderate your drinking."

//We could just post them outside of each classroom, stumbling all over one another,// Jono mused. //That'd set the whole student body straight in no time, I suppose.//

Jono missed drinking, damn it.

"Or it would just make everyone reminisce about their latest drunken shenanigans," Kate chuckled. "And then the teachers would get annoyed."

//And we wouldn't want to annoy the teachers, now would we?//

The sarcasm, it was thick with this one.

"Hey, if they get annoyed, they'll be in a pissy mood in class, and then we'll suffer," Kate argued. "It's all about self-preservation."

//Not that it makes much difference, really. We'll end up in detention either way, apparently.// It was sound logic, if you were Jono. //At least we'd get a bit of entertainment, watching them trip over squirrels wot can't even walk in a straight line.//

Kate grinned. "Well yeah, there's always that. But we'd probably be too busy tripping over them ourselves to get much fun out of the teachers doing it."

//There's a certain charm to truancy,// Jono mused, crossing his arms over his chest. //Stand outside the school. Just watch the teachers stumble in and out. I'd bring a camera.//

"Which could then open up the possibility of blackmailing people," Kate smirked. Not that she'd ever do that, of course.

Unless maybe almost certainly in danger of failing a class.

//And if that's the case, then perhaps it wouldn't do any harm at all to put the squirrels out of work,// Jono agreed.

He could absolutely get on board with this train of logic, yes!

Kate laughed. "No, it definitely is starting to sound like squirrel unemployment could be beneficial for us."

//Now I suppose the question is what it would take to convince Layla of the same.//

That would be the challenge, there. Right?

"I think she could be bribed with s'mores," Kate mused.

//Better get to it now, then. S'more season is on its way out.// And it would be a very sad thing if it up and left entirely, without giving them the opportunity to properly bribe Layla.

"People keep giving me reasons to sneak back to the cabins," Kate said. "I'm starting to think I should. There's no s'mores like the ones made at the campfires, after all."

To his credit, Jono hadn't managed to jump into his own little pity-party yet through this conversation. It was entirely possible that he'd more or less keep up the trend.

//I never was much of a camper, luv. I suppose I'll have to take yer word for that one.//

More or less.

"I have to admit I'm speaking mostly from hearsay," Kate grinned. "I missed most of the s'mores this summer. The cabins were nice, though."

She tilted her head a little to the side. "Where are you from?"

//London, born and raised,// Jonothon replied, shrugging faintly. //More recently? Massachusetts. Isn't quite the same.//

By a long shot.

"Yeah, I can imagine," Kate said. "I'm from Kansas, both originally and recently."
