Ethics Class [Thursday, September 10, 1st period]

"Today we discuss lying," Anakin said as he closed the classroom door precisely on time. "Everyone lies. 'Of course that doesn't make your butt look big.' 'You like her, I like her.' 'I'm totally okay with you moving on.' 'Everything's fine, why do you ask?' It's how the world goes around because no one wants to be trapped in a conversation where someone whines at you for hours on end about how awful their life is."

He looked around the room. "Trust me. Everyone's life is terrible. They're just not telling you about it. Be grateful."

He reached onto his desk for a piece of paper. "Today we're conducting an exercise to see how well you pass this particular social ritual, then we'll discuss whether you think it is necessary. We're playing two truths and a lie. I'll tell you three things about myself and you have to decide which one is the falsehood. Then you'll all tell three things and we'll see how well you can either read each other or keep things hidden."

He gave them a small smile. "I'm very good at this." He schooled his face to absolute neutrality, put his mental blocks up to bar any psychics in the room from gaining an advantage, then recited: "During a war at home I was known as 'The Hero Without Fear.' I have three children. I am the youngest Jedi ever to join the Jedi Council, which governed my Order." His eyes challenged them to call him out. "Who's next?"

Two truths and a lie: Emma Frost

"I live in Manhattan, I have two sisters, and I'm allergic to coffee," Emma said, oddly amused at this game. None of them was 100% true, but only one was a complete lie.

"Being allergic to coffee is the lie?" Ellie said. At least she hoped so for Emma's sake.

"Such a horrible, horrible lie," Emma sighed. "I think I have caffeine instead of blood in my circulatory system."

Ellie chuckled. "I think the same could be said of most of the people on this island."
icecoldfrost: (Emma is up to no good)

"The truth behind the students at Fandom High has been revealed," she announced, pressing a hand over her heart dramatically. "We're all coffee-powered robots."

Ellie laughed. "That would really not surprise me."

"Technically what you live here now, right?" Rose asked.

"I suppose technically I live here now, but my permanent address remains off-island," Emma replied thoughtfully. Which was totally true -- but her legal address was still Boston. Maybe. Emma wondered if her father had ever bothered to report her missing.

"And I do tend to go into the city when there's a particularly fantastic party brewing."

"You're not allergic to coffee." Okay, so he was using the roommate thing to his advantage here.

"Cheating, darling," Emma sang, wriggling her fingers at him. "I don't think you get to guess."

And now I've lost a perfectly good opportunity to try my hand at rifling through your head, Karla sent, amusement coloring her psychic thread. But I know you aren't allergic to coffee.

< You could try, darling, > Emma challenged, giving Karla a wink. < And no, I'm not. That would be simply horrid. >

*I'd only go in with a reason,* Karla sent. And even that reason was horribly flimsy, but Karla felt okay about it since Emma wouldn't mind her trying. Still, there were rules about that kind of thing; rules she'd learned since early childhood.

*And if you were allergic, I'd put all of my Healing powers into finding you a cure. Or at least making it possible for you to drink coffee anyway. I'm a good friend.*

Rules that Emma had yet to learn, and probably never would.

*How else could you be expected to get through a morning?* Karlas asked, sounding horrified. *I mean, being deprived of coffee would just be cruel.*

Raven couldn't read Emma, so she had to guess. "I think coffee is the lie," she said, "for I am certain I would have felt the horror of those addicted to it if they had learned of this."

"This is true," Emma replied wryly. "I think half the school would be up in arms at the injustice of it all."

He couldn't figure out if any of them were true, but he figured...

"Are you really allergic to coffee?"

"No, although the world might be a safer place if I was," Emma replied. "Or more dangerous before I'm fully awake in the mornings. I'm not quite sure."

"Like the poor children with peanut allergies. They're probably safer here than a non-coffee-drinker," Emma agreed. "We're the only school where 'decaf' is a swear-word."
