Ethics Class [Thursday, September 10, 1st period]

"Today we discuss lying," Anakin said as he closed the classroom door precisely on time. "Everyone lies. 'Of course that doesn't make your butt look big.' 'You like her, I like her.' 'I'm totally okay with you moving on.' 'Everything's fine, why do you ask?' It's how the world goes around because no one wants to be trapped in a conversation where someone whines at you for hours on end about how awful their life is."

He looked around the room. "Trust me. Everyone's life is terrible. They're just not telling you about it. Be grateful."

He reached onto his desk for a piece of paper. "Today we're conducting an exercise to see how well you pass this particular social ritual, then we'll discuss whether you think it is necessary. We're playing two truths and a lie. I'll tell you three things about myself and you have to decide which one is the falsehood. Then you'll all tell three things and we'll see how well you can either read each other or keep things hidden."

He gave them a small smile. "I'm very good at this." He schooled his face to absolute neutrality, put his mental blocks up to bar any psychics in the room from gaining an advantage, then recited: "During a war at home I was known as 'The Hero Without Fear.' I have three children. I am the youngest Jedi ever to join the Jedi Council, which governed my Order." His eyes challenged them to call him out. "Who's next?"

"Animals hate me. My best friend is a fairy. My old school held classes at night."

Rose figured those were straight-forward enough without just being weird.

"I find it hard to believe that all animals would hate you," Raven said. Fairies and night school, those were much easier to accept.

"They find it easy to hate me though," Rose said with a quick grin.

"And why would they hate you?" Raven asked, still skeptical. "You seem pleasant enough to me."

Rose shrugged. "It's a thing, I dunno," she said. "They say it's cause we're half-human."

That got Raven's attention. "Half-human?" she repeated. "What is the other half of your heritage, if you do not mind me asking."

"Yeah, she's totally not," Rose agreed with a grin. "She'd be pissed if she knew I was saying that about her too."

"What's a fairy?" Karla asked, confused by the term. It was one they didn't have in Kaeleer. "And are we counting the island's squirrels as regular animals?"

Rose laughed. "Dude, no, the island's squirrels have drunk way too much rum to be considered real animals."

Karla grinned at that. "I'd have to agree. Then what's a fairy? Tell me that and I'll guess your secret."

She tried to look all witchy and imposing. The giggles probably didn't help much with that.

"Little magical things with wings," Rose said, trying not to giggle too.

"I think you'd give a better description if your best friend was a fairy," Karla decided. "Since for all I know, you mean a flying rock. So that's the lie?"

Though she was tempted by the night classes option. It was just so normal, she could see it being false.
