Ethics Class [Thursday, September 10, 1st period]

"Today we discuss lying," Anakin said as he closed the classroom door precisely on time. "Everyone lies. 'Of course that doesn't make your butt look big.' 'You like her, I like her.' 'I'm totally okay with you moving on.' 'Everything's fine, why do you ask?' It's how the world goes around because no one wants to be trapped in a conversation where someone whines at you for hours on end about how awful their life is."

He looked around the room. "Trust me. Everyone's life is terrible. They're just not telling you about it. Be grateful."

He reached onto his desk for a piece of paper. "Today we're conducting an exercise to see how well you pass this particular social ritual, then we'll discuss whether you think it is necessary. We're playing two truths and a lie. I'll tell you three things about myself and you have to decide which one is the falsehood. Then you'll all tell three things and we'll see how well you can either read each other or keep things hidden."

He gave them a small smile. "I'm very good at this." He schooled his face to absolute neutrality, put his mental blocks up to bar any psychics in the room from gaining an advantage, then recited: "During a war at home I was known as 'The Hero Without Fear.' I have three children. I am the youngest Jedi ever to join the Jedi Council, which governed my Order." His eyes challenged them to call him out. "Who's next?"

Raven was not really much of a liar (unless it came to denying her own distress), but she took a breath, shielded herself, and made the attempt.

"Before I came to Fandom, I had never used a computer. I have never tasted meat. In my home of Azarath, my name means 'Messenger Angel.'"

Rose had absolutely no clue. "...Messenger Angel? Do you like have to run errands for people?"
trigons_child: (Sideways half-smile)

Re: Two truths and a lie

[personal profile] trigons_child 2009-09-10 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Raven smiled softly. "Messenger might be the wrong word. Herald, perhaps? It is not so much rushing about and delivering letters or packages." It was also not her with that name, it was her mother, Arella, but she wasn't admitting to which was the lie yet.

"Like in the Christmas songs?" Rose asked, still thinking that was kinda insane. "Though, um, yay for not having to randomly leave and deliver a package of M&Ms."
trigons_child: (Smile)

"I would have little time for classes if that were the case," Raven said.

"So you're saying that's not your name?" she asked.

"I did not say that," Raven teased, "but...yes, it is not my name. It is my mother's name, Arella."

"She's the Christmas song then," Rose asked, grinning.
trigons_child: (Finding you interesting)

"I had never looked at it that way," Raven mused. "We do not have Christmas in Azarath."

"I'm going to guess that you never tasted meat," Ellie guessed.

"I am indeed a vegetarian," Raven said. And Chuck Bass totally doesn't count.

Ellie was sure she could never be a vegetarian, but did not say it out loud. "Your name means something else?"

She vaguely recalled a conversation with Raven that pretty much eliminated the first option. Of course, she could have remembered it wrong.
trigons_child: (Considering)

[personal profile] trigons_child 2009-09-10 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
She was remembering wrong. "Messenger Angel is actually the translation of my mother's name," Raven said. "Arella. My name has no hidden meaning that I am aware of."

Re: Two truths and a lie

[identity profile] awesomebigsis.livejournal.com 2009-09-10 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm not sure mine has any hidden meaning either," Ellie said with a small smile.

Ravens might be seen as messenger birds, but Karla was fairly certain that they weren't considered angels. Of course, she only had a hazy idea of what angels were, so she could be wrong, but she rather doubted it. After all, Azarath hadn't sounded particularly big on either technology or eating meat.

"I think you were on the computer just as much as I was before coming to Fandom," Karla teased. "And I know your stance on meat."
trigons_child: (Looking up pleased)

Re: Two truths and a lie

[personal profile] trigons_child 2009-09-10 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard you might have the same stance on...meat.

"I cannot fool you," Raven said, smiling. "It is my mother's name that means 'Messenger Angel.' Azar named her Arella when she was brought to Azarath."
glacial_queen: (Sweet smile)

Chuck Bass's meat? You're damn right. Although, Virgin Night--good sex with no strings? He'd probably be perfect!

"I just know you too well," Karla said, sharing Raven's grin. "Though I did have a bit of help." Tangled webs were good for these kind of things.

He was good at it -- not that I would tell him that and stroke his ego.

Raven nodded. "And I am not a good liar."

He was reasonably sure of his guess.

"The one about your name."

Raven looked over to Liir. "Why do you say that?" she asked.

"The bit about computers is rather normal around here, and I thought you'd mentioned you were vegetarian."
trigons_child: (Sideways half-smile)

Re: Two truths and a lie

[personal profile] trigons_child 2009-09-10 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"You are correct," Raven said. "Arella is the name that means 'Messenger Angel,' but that name was given to my mother when she first came to Azarath."

Re: Two truths and a lie

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2009-09-10 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
He breathed out a little sigh of relief. He'd thought he might have insulted her or something for a moment there.

"Both names are pretty."

He grinned at that.

"You're very welcome."
