Multicultural Fair! [The Gym - After Classes]

The benefit of doing something like this for the second time meant that Joan and Turtle had a much easier time of setting things up since they knew what worked and what didn't.

Turtle had, once again, provided decorations from Turtle & Canary. There was the requisite refreshment table, though it was primarily there to provide beverages, since most of the booths featured culturally appropriate food.

After set up was complete, Joan and Turtle sat down to catch up while they waited for the fair to begin.

[wait for the ocd or Turtle will kick you in the shin OCD up! No shins were harmed in the making of this post!]

At least a few sets of the bleachers were pulled out in case anyone just wanted to sit and watch, but what fun was that? The place was decorated to match the Fair, and it was a great place to just hang out and chat with people before checking out the booths.

Set up around the gym are several tables for people to set up their displays of their culture! Each booth will be getting a separate OCD for them to ping into, describe their booth, and then people can ping in to react and response. Delicious OCD! OM NOM NOM.

Talk to Turtle -- 09/09

For the most part, Turtle was staying stationed by her section of the refreshments tables, happy to tell anyone at all about Wisconsin and its amazing cheeses.

She could probably talk about cows a little bit, too. She once kicked a cow in the shins. It was not as pleasant as you might imagine.

Cal Stephanides was not a Facespitter.

Okay, he was. But only when people really deserved it. Especially Shinkickers.

Either way, there was a booth set up in Cal's spot, with a lot of white and blue and peppered with pictures for Cal's trip over the summer, of Greek-style churches that were really located in Turkey, but, shhh, no one would notice, right? The pictures weren't exactly the point of the booth, anyway.

The food was. There was plenty of food and Cal had missed making it for people, which only reminded him yet again that he really needed to talk to Lacey about getting his job back. For the moment, though, he was peddling his baklava (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baklava) and spanakopita (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanakopita) and lamb souvlaki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Souvlaki) on the visitors to the Multi-Culti Fair.

And, of course, the feature was the small set-up he had for saganaki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saganaki). Very safe set up. If he was going to be setting cheese on fire in the gym, he wanted to make sure he didn't get in trouble for it. There was a bucket of water underneath the table, and about two portable fire extinguishers. No burning the gym down for the sake of flaming fried cheese.

Though that would be kind of cool.

Naomi had enjoyed doing this the last time it was on, so she had signed up again to talk about the Ktarian culture.

It was pretty much set out the same as last time, with her model (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/File:Ktaris.jpg) of Ktaris and the Ktarian dishes: Ktarian egg (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Ktarian_egg), Ktarian chocolate puff (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Ktarian_chocolate_puff) and Ktarian pudding (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Ktarian_pudding)

Eric had no idea how he had managed to end up signed up for something like this, but a few whiny phone calls to his mommy and to Mr. Feeny had helped tremendously.

There were Philly Cheesesteaks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheesesteak) for people to try (no, don't worry, Eric didn't make them) and an assortment of Tastykakes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tastykake#Varieties).

And if people were interested in more than food, Eric also had a replica of the Liberty Bell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty_Bell), some Phillies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philadelphia_Phillies) memorabilia (from their 1980 World Series win; he still didn't know about the recent one), and a copy of the Declaration of Independence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Declaration_of_Independence).

Work was done, the sorority was later, and she was very fond of cultures, so Valentine made some time to swing by the gym, nibbling on a cookie was she drifted around with interest.

"Oh, wow," Hayley said, walking over to the booth. "You're Greek?"

For the doe-eyed girl, Cal could be anything she wanted. So this made it pretty easy. He grinned, lopsided and proud, shoulders squaring a little. "You bet. Third generation Greek-American. My grandparents immigrated in the '20s."

Drake was very pleased with his presentation (though it was a good thing Cole couldn't see it, or else he'd get his ass vanquished). He had a series of pictures mounted behind him with big black letters across the top that said:

The Many Faces (and Fashions) of the Source of All Evil

Underneath that was:

The Source of All Evil is -- or, rather, was -- the ruler of the Underworld. The power of the Source is passed down through the bloodline or, in rare cases, through a magical bond. All other demons can sense the mantle of power of the Source and must obey him. He is the most powerful demon in the Underworld.

He also has terrible fashion sense.

Below each picture was some text to describe it.

Picture One
As demonstrated in here, one can see the Source was going for some sort of "evil angel" effect. I prefer to call this outfit "New Always Source with Wings!"

Picture Two
When Big Red didn't go over well, the Source switched to a more somber look, a simple black robe. Not even velvet. Tim Gunn would be very concerned.

Picture Three
This shows the Source going for a more intimidating looking by revealing his face. The scars and lack of an eye are impressive, but the effect is ruined by the questionable facial hair.

Picture Four
After that the Source decided just to start over and jump into a new body. Handsome devil, isn't he? Didn't last though, because the original owner didn't appreciate being hijacked.

Picture Five (with additional inset picture)
So then the Source jumped into the unborn child of his unwilling host. Unfortunately, this also meant he inherited the fashion sense of said baby's mother, which at times has been pretty scary.

Picture Six
Finally, realizing that phenomenal cosmic power meant little with an itty bitty living space, the Source allowed himself to be transplanted into the body of the Seer, version 1.0, she of the fabulous hair and voice. She embraced the simplicity of robes, but as you can see here, they're velvet and a lovely dark red. In a way, the fashion sense had come full circle, but the final results are much more stunning.

Drake, of course, was available for any questions.

[And yes, if you know Bel or Phoebe, feel free to recognize them from the pictures. :) ]

Hoshi decorated her booth with photographs of Mt. Fuji (http://postcardexchange.net/wp-content/uploads/shin-kansen.jpg), Buddhist temples (http://travel.nationalgeographic.com/places/images/photos/photo_lg_japan.jpg), and geisha girls (http://www.phototravels.net/kyoto/geisha-n/geisha-kyoto-n-001.2.jpg). But she'd put more work into the food, of course. There was miso soup, kappa maki (http://japanesefood.about.com/od/sushiroll/r/cucumberroll.htm), vegetable tempura, and mochi (http://japanesefood.about.com/od/mochi/a/aboutmochi.htm).

She was waiting for more of a crowd before started her demonstration of writing in kanji, but there were two padded sumo suits if people wanted to try sumo wrestling.
