Multicultural Fair! [The Gym - After Classes]

The benefit of doing something like this for the second time meant that Joan and Turtle had a much easier time of setting things up since they knew what worked and what didn't.

Turtle had, once again, provided decorations from Turtle & Canary. There was the requisite refreshment table, though it was primarily there to provide beverages, since most of the booths featured culturally appropriate food.

After set up was complete, Joan and Turtle sat down to catch up while they waited for the fair to begin.

Jack was mostly there so he could watch in fascinated horror -- or horrified fascination -- if Miss Liddell decided to talk again. (He'd gained a sense of humor about it, though he still thought her concept of their time ludicrous.)

Still. There was food, there was people, and so there was Jack, roaming the tables with bright eyes.

Emma sneakily came up behind him to try and place her hands over his eyes. "Snooping about, are we Mr. Priest?" she mock-scolded. "Shame. A detective ought not be so obvious."

"No reason to find out in the dark what you can learn in the light, Miss Frost," Jack laughed, reaching his hands up to lightly grab her wrists. "Besides, if I meant to snoop you wouldn't have seen me."

"Is that a challenge?" Emma asked, still teasing and not yet trying to pull away. "Considering my radar for trouble, I'm rather sure I could find you with my eyes closed."

Using her powers, of course.

"Without your powers? You could not." Jack knew Emma, after all, and he lightly ran his fingers over the tendons in her wrist. "Besides, I have a tricksy brain, remember?" I might be able to confuse you even with powers in play."

"Asking me not to use my powers in a game like that is like telling you not to use your ears," she replied cheerfully. "Although I wouldn't put it past you to think contrary things at me."

"You have ears too, Emma," Jack said, and thought //and they stick out// at her cheerfully.

It was worth noting that Emma's ears did no such thing.

Emma narrowed her eyes and sent him the mental equivalent of a raspberry.

"Mean, Mr. Priest," she sulked, deciding to try and reclaim her captive wrists. "They do no such thing."

Jack let her arms slide away from him, then stepped back to face her.

"They don't," he agreed. "My mistake. But why am I not surprised that got you to listen?"

Through sheer force of will, he managed not to add any mental comments about her physique to this moment.

"I listen," she protested, giving him her best wide-eyed pout. "How can you say I don't listen, when that's what I'm best at?"

Jack's mouth twisted into a half-feral smile. "You," he told her, "are a woman of varied skills. Who am I to judge which of them is your best?"

"I thought it was a detective's job to come to a conclusion," she replied. "Are you saying you don't have enough evidence to back-up your theories?"

"I'm saying," Jack said, and something was making his voice catch in his throat, "I think you are the best at a great many things. And, as modesty is not one of them, I suspect you know what they are."

That earned him a brilliant smile, and Emma stepped closer to him. "You're right, modesty isn't one of my strong suits," she agreed, giving him a half-shrug. "I find it silly."

"But I still remain intrigued by what you think my better qualities are. I know what I think."

Jack laughed. "Asking for flattery, Emma?" he queried. "Well, you're intelligent -- you knew that. You put up with me, so you like a challenge -- you knew that, too. You have your gifts, and you've figured out how to use them in entirely practical ways. And -- and you know I think this, too -- you're exceptionally beautiful." The //and very good in bed// was thought, not spoken.

"A woman always likes hearing she's beautiful, Jack, no matter how many times she's heard it before," she said wryly. "We like the reassurance, because we never quite believe it."

Which was the closest Emma was ever going to admit to being insecure about anything, especially regarding her appearance.

"Oddly enough, we can turn all those around and apply them to you as well." Emma tilted her head and gave him a lopsided grin. "I suppose we both like a challenge."

Jack nodded, trying not to grin. "We certainly seem to," he said. "And it doesn't surprise me that like attracts like."

"There are exceptions," Jack said, and, before she could comment on that, added, "I tried out for the play yesterday."

She'd comment on it later, for now she'd let him change the subject.

"Again? You've been bitten by the acting bug, Jack," she laughed. "What play is the theatre putting on next?"

"I enjoy performing," he told her, with a faint smirk. "Midsummer Night's Dream. You know, mismatched lovers, fairies, a tinker wit the head of an ass ... I've always rather liked it."

Emma returned the smirk, amused. Of course he enjoyed performing, he was a complete ham for attention. In a good way, of course.

"I know that one," she replied. "We studied it in school, and they made it into a movie a few years back. Have you seen it yet?"
