Multicultural Fair! [The Gym - After Classes]

The benefit of doing something like this for the second time meant that Joan and Turtle had a much easier time of setting things up since they knew what worked and what didn't.

Turtle had, once again, provided decorations from Turtle & Canary. There was the requisite refreshment table, though it was primarily there to provide beverages, since most of the booths featured culturally appropriate food.

After set up was complete, Joan and Turtle sat down to catch up while they waited for the fair to begin.

That earned him a brilliant smile, and Emma stepped closer to him. "You're right, modesty isn't one of my strong suits," she agreed, giving him a half-shrug. "I find it silly."

"But I still remain intrigued by what you think my better qualities are. I know what I think."

Jack laughed. "Asking for flattery, Emma?" he queried. "Well, you're intelligent -- you knew that. You put up with me, so you like a challenge -- you knew that, too. You have your gifts, and you've figured out how to use them in entirely practical ways. And -- and you know I think this, too -- you're exceptionally beautiful." The //and very good in bed// was thought, not spoken.

"A woman always likes hearing she's beautiful, Jack, no matter how many times she's heard it before," she said wryly. "We like the reassurance, because we never quite believe it."

Which was the closest Emma was ever going to admit to being insecure about anything, especially regarding her appearance.

"Oddly enough, we can turn all those around and apply them to you as well." Emma tilted her head and gave him a lopsided grin. "I suppose we both like a challenge."

Jack nodded, trying not to grin. "We certainly seem to," he said. "And it doesn't surprise me that like attracts like."

"If like attracts like, does that mean you're difficult too?"

Jack's smile was angelic. "Only when I want something."

Of course, that was almost all the time,

"Mmmm. And that's what, all of the time?" she mused thoughtfully. "Shocking."

"There are exceptions," Jack said, and, before she could comment on that, added, "I tried out for the play yesterday."

She'd comment on it later, for now she'd let him change the subject.

"Again? You've been bitten by the acting bug, Jack," she laughed. "What play is the theatre putting on next?"

"I enjoy performing," he told her, with a faint smirk. "Midsummer Night's Dream. You know, mismatched lovers, fairies, a tinker wit the head of an ass ... I've always rather liked it."

Emma returned the smirk, amused. Of course he enjoyed performing, he was a complete ham for attention. In a good way, of course.

"I know that one," she replied. "We studied it in school, and they made it into a movie a few years back. Have you seen it yet?"

Jack shook his head, blissfully oblivious to her assessment of him as a ham. "I have not. Was it any good?"

"It's not bad. If you're interested, I'll get a copy and we can critique it together," she suggested. "Since neither of us are in a film class this semester, we ought to stay in practice."

"We ought to," Jack agreed. "Especially if you're going to be in it too."

"'If I'm going to be in it?'" she echoed, blinking at him. "But I didn't audition."

His grin got larger. "Then you'll need to fix that next Tuesday, won't you?"

"Why would I want to do that?" she demurred. "Maybe I enjoy watching you perform."

"Because it's fun, it would entertain you and keep you busy, and theater people make for the best gossip," Jack answered, then, more softly, added, "and because I would like to have you there."

Oh, that was playing dirty, and Emma gave him a rueful half-smile.

"Are you saying I need to be kept busy?" she asked, stepping into his space to set a hand on his hip. "Shame, Jack. You make it sound like I'm some sort of delinquent."

Jack swayed into her space easily. "I just know how wasteful idle hands are," he argued. "Is that a yes? Or do you want me to say please?"

"It's not a no," she pointed out. "Let's call it 'Emma will think about it,' and you can sway me over a movie and popcorn."

"A hard bargain," he said, and traced fingers over the small of her back. "When?"

Sadly, right now was not an option.

"What are you doing tomorrow or this weekend?" she asked, just barely leaning into his touch. "I'm sure we can arrange something."

"My classes for the week are over," Jack answered. "Tomorrow evening?"

"You have yourself a date," Emma replied. "I'm looking forward to it, Mr. Priest."
